AvantGo joins GAA

AvantGo announced that it has teamed up with Ericsson Inc. and joined the GPRS Application Alliance (GAA), an Ericsson-led initiative to support the creation and adoption of Mobile Internet applications based on the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) standard. Other Alliance members include IBM, Palm Computing, Lotus, Oracle and Symbian. The relationship with Ericsson is a step for Mobile Unity, AvantGo’s strategy to deliver Web-based information and applications to all classes of wireless devices.

Ups and downs

If you tried to get into our site on Monday and had some problems, we’re hoping they’re now long gone. Verio, our ISP, has had some hardware difficulties in their facility and they’ve been chasing ghosts most of Monday. While being up and down is always a bummer, special thanks go to Verio for keeping us informed on what’s going on.

Palm, Sun team-up with iPlanet

Palm, Inc., Sun Microsystems and iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance announced plans to develop an end-to-end solution that will provide wireless access to enterprise applications and services via Palm OS handheld computers. As part of the proposed solution, iPlanet plans to add support for Palm’s Web clipping architecture and Palm OS handhelds to its new iPlanet Wireless Server software, enabling corporate users to access their enterprise data through Palm’s Palm.Net wireless service.

Intelligolf for Visor

Karrier Communications announced the shipment of IntelliGolf for the Handspring Visor. The new IntelliGolf module plugs into the Visor’s Springboard expansion slot to add golf scorecard capabilities to the handheld. IntelliGolf for the Visor is immediately available for $39.95.

PocketPC in April

ZDNet reports that Microsoft will launch the PocketPC in April. Apparently, there will be two types of the Pocket PC. The first will be the PocketPC Standard, which are said to have basic capabilities and monochrome screens for $199. There is also the PocketPC Professional, which will have more features.

ThumbType for Palm OS?

We just came across a very funky add-on for the Palm device from Japan called the ThumbType. According to the site’s information, you attach this strip over your Palm’s writing surface and you can type in data. We’re still somewhat skeptical and we haven’t yet seen any sign of review units. Nonetheless, if we can find anything out in the future, we’ll be sure to let you know.
