PC Week has this article on voice recognition in handheld devices. IBM previewed a Personal Speech Assistant prototype, a conversational user interface for the Palm III personal digital assistant that includes IBM’s Speech Coprocessor. IBM also demonstrated ViaVoice for Lotus Notes, which uses voice commands to compose, send, reply to and forward email.

As Palm moves closer and closer to its IPO, News.com takes a look at Palm’s strategy. The article says that Palm is looking to transistion its business from focusing on hardware to licensing its operating system software.

Red Herring takes a look at Palm’s upcoming IPO. According to the article, Palm’s strong growth rate makes the company look good compared to all of the other recent IPOs.

News.com reports that a company called E-Pass Technologies has filed suit against 3Com in federal court in New York. The suit alleges that 3Com infringed a 1994 patent in developing the Palm Pilot.

This article from ZDNet says that Palm’s strategy is to establish its operating system as the OS of choice for any kind of handheld device, from phones to audio devices and game machines.

ZDNet takes a look at Symbian’s Quartz device. The device is expected to be competition to Palm and Windows CE devices.

Wired News says that Microsoft’s Pocket PC will be out before June 30. The article says that devices will be made by Casio, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Symbol Technologies.

AvantGo announced that it has teamed up with Ericsson Inc. and joined the GPRS Application Alliance (GAA), an Ericsson-led initiative to support the creation and adoption of Mobile Internet applications based on the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) standard. Other Alliance members include IBM, Palm Computing, Lotus, Oracle and Symbian. The relationship with Ericsson is a step for Mobile Unity, AvantGo’s strategy to deliver Web-based information and applications to all classes of wireless devices.
