Porting Partner Program

Microsoft announced the introduction of a Windows CE Porting Partner Program to increase the number of microprocessors supported by the Microsoft Windows CE operating system. Companies signing on as official Microsoft Porting Partners will be authorized to port the Windows CE operating system and tools (Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder, Microsoft Windows CE Toolkit for Visual C++, Microsoft Windows CE Toolkit for Visual Basic) to new semiconductor processor architectures.

SyncMonitor

A new software tool that allows Palm computers to work with other infrared-enabled appliances without exiting HotSync was launched today by Calibre Inc. Allowing users to connect to other infrared appliances while HotSync runs in the background, SyncMonitor works with the Palm OS 3.3 or higher to manage the serial communication port traffic on the PC’s infrared (IR) port.

Vodafone portal coming

Vodafone AirTouch announced that it has selected IBM to design, build, manage and run a global Internet portal for wireless devices. These will include mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) from Nokia, Ericsson, Palm Computing and other companies. In addition, IBM will integrate applications and content from e-businesses such as Charles Schwab, Sabre, Travelocity.com and InfoSpace.com. This wireless Web portal is expected to be launched in July 2000 in Australia, Europe and North America.

Xerox, 3Com in court

News.com reports that Xerox can take 3Com to court over the Graffiti handwriting recognition software.

AOL, Time Warner merge

AOL and Time Warner announced they will merge into one huge multimedia company, to be called AOL Time Warner. ZDNet says that Steve Case will be chairman of AOL Time Warner with Time Warner chief Gerald Levin taking the reins as CEO. Ted Turner, vice chairman of Time Warner will remain vice chairman of the merged company.

PocketPC predictions

Forbes has this article on the recently announced PocketPC. The article says that despite the changes in the Windows CE operating system, there won’t be any changes in market share.

Windows Media Player

Microsoft unveiled the Windows Media Player for Palm-size and Pocket PCs, giving consumers access to CD-quality music on Palm-size and Pocket PC devices. The Microsoft Windows Media Player for Palm-size PCs is scheduled to be available for download in February 2000 for Casio Cassiopeia E-100 and E-105, the Compaq Aero 1500 and 2100 Series, and the Hewlett-Packard Jornada 430SE Palm-size PC model owners. The Windows Media Player will support Windows Media and MP3 formats.
