MS buys STNC

The Electronic Engineering Times reports that Microsoft has acquired STNC Ltd., developer of the Internet browser portion of Epoc, the 32-bit real-time operating system of Symbian. According to the article, STNC would work to integrate its compact communications and browsing software with Windows CE and with Microsoft’s microbrowser technology.

Is Palm USB real?

We’ve recieved a number of letters from readers attempting to get the PalmConnect USB kit to link their Palm devices to their USB-equipped Macintosh machines. Apparently, calls to Palm are being rebuffed, with readers being told that there is no such item. For those of you concerned, we can tell you that Palm has officially announced availability of this product, but its not due until August. Now you know. Perhaps soon, Palm’s own employees will be told.

Good news for Mac users

News.com has good news for Mac users that have a Palm device. Microsoft added the ability for users to synchronize data with Outlook Express’s built-in contact manager. The article also said that the only program designed for this was the email and contact program included with the Palm devices.

Palm phones

3Com CEO Eric Benhamou said a new Palm organizer with phone capabilities is coming soon. According to Computer Reseller News, Benhamou announced the device at CA World 99 in a question-and-answer session with Computer Associates president Sanjay Kumar.

CalliGrapher 5.3 available

ParaGraph, a division of Vadem, announced availability of its new CalliGrapher 5.3 natural handwriting recognition software. The new version is optimized to work with the latest Microsoft Windows CE-based palm-sized PCs featuring color screens, as well as H/PC and H/PC Professional Edition devices with pen-input capabilities.

IP Works Java beta

devSoft Inc. announced the first beta release of IP*Works! Java Edition Version 4.0 – a Java version of its Internet Toolkit. IP*Works! contains programmable components such as interfaces to Internet Mail and Usenet News, as well as TCP/IP programming tools used to build generic clients and servers.

USAR integrated into H/PC Pro

USAR Systems announced that the USAR Juno H/PC companion IC has been integrated into the design of the Compaq Aero 8000. The Aero 8000 is Compaq’s Windows CE-based handheld PC Professional (H/PC Pro) device. The USAR Juno controls input device, power management and other system-related functions.
