Apple bundles Palm Desktop

You may have heard about Apple’s new “consumer portable”, the iBook. What you might not realize is that Apple is bundling the Palm Desktop software with each copy of the iBook. “But,” you might say, “you need a Palm device to use the Palm Desktop.” Well, that’s not really true. The Palm Desktop is now based on the old Claris Organizer (recall that Claris was once an Apple company, now its resources are just distributed within Apple itself). It is interesting that Apple lists the product with the name Palm Desktop (there’s some deal-magic happening here). And it might be an interesting leader into more Palm sales for the 3Com folks. This may have been the source of the rumor of a Palm-related announcement at Macworld. Interestingly, Palm hasn’t said much about this nor have we received a press release from them. — DG

Based. Hmm. –DG
