According to the article, Microsoft won’t build the device, rather it will license the underlying software technology such as the Windows CE operating system to manufacturers including Samsung.

allNetDevices reports Socket Communications has added support for its Digital Phone Card wireless connectivity kit for Motorola’s StarTAC, Timeport, Talkabout and V. Series wireless phone product lines. With the kit, those phones can act as a modem for Pocket PC handhelds, Windows laptops, or Apple PowerBook computers.

Cartoonist Peter S. Conrad has signed an agreement with AvantGo, Inc. to distribute his single-panel cartoons as a channel on the AvantGo mobile Internet service beginning August 22. According to the press release, the channel is to be called Handheld Cartoons and will be the first handheld channel to offer a weekly cartoon feature.

Metaworks has introduced Mantis Retail, a data collection and management system designed for handheld computers using the Palm OS. According to the press release, the software can be used in the field to collect and edit data, contains a central database used to house the information, and has a Web interface for report creation and data management.

Yahoo has a press release from Sony announcing the launch of its Sony Handheld Developer Web site. The site offers information to third party hardware and software developers for building applications specific to Sony’s Jog Dial controller and Memory Stick media slot featured on its Palm OS software-powered handheld device. According to the press release, the Sony developer Web site is accessible free of charge to private or corporate developers who register as members.
