PGA TOUR MobileLink

The PGA TOUR has announced its latest interactive service, PGA TOUR MobileLink, allowing golf fans free wireless access to real-time scoring, TOUR news and player information. Air2Web is powering the application. PGA TOUR MobileLink is being offered to golf fans on any text messaging or Internet-enabled phone, pager, or personal digital assistant (PDA) such as a Palm handheld. Users can customize the news they receive to keep up with their favorite players or tournaments. The information made available will continue to increase over the next several months and will include real-time leaderboards, tournament schedules, weather and television broadcast reminders, player scores and statistics, and the latest TOUR headlines.

Treo to run on BT Cellnet

Handspring announced the Handspring Treo 180 has been launched exclusively in the UK by BT Cellnet. Treo is the first integrated Palm OS wireless communicator to run on the BT Cellnet network, combining mobile phone, organiser, Web browsing, and messaging applications in a small and lightweight device.

PalmSource names Yochum

PalmSource, Inc., the Palm OS subsidiary of Palm, Inc., announced that Doreen S. (Dory) Yochum has been named chief administrative officer. Yochum, formerly with AT&T, will be responsible for all operational aspects of the subsidiary and will oversee its transition to full independence as a separate entity. Yochum will report to David Nagel, PalmSource president and chief executive officer.

Palm, Inc. released its list of February’s top 10 best-selling ebooks from Palm Digital Media. Palm Digital Media offers more than 4,000 titles from most major U.S. publishing houses. The ebooks are available for reading with Palm Reader. Palm Reader runs on Palm OS handhelds using Palm OS 3.0 and higher, as well as on Pocket PC handhelds.

New products from iambic

iambic Inc. announced it has released a series of new and upgraded software products to support the Palm OS family. Available for demonstration at CeBIT 2002 is newly created Action Names School contact-management and scheduling software, along with upgraded versions of the company’s iambic Mail portable email solution.

New smartphone from Samsung

CNN reports Samsung Electronics plans to put on sale in the U.S. a new version of its Palm OS based PDA cell-phone handset in April. According to the article, the SPH-M330 is smaller and lighter than the current model and will work on Code Division Multiple Access 2000 1X networks. It also adds support for gpsOne, a hybrid service that combines signals from GPS satellites and CDMA base stations to determine a user’s location.

Palm has released a Palm Desktop 4.1 beta for download. The new version adds two new technologies which allow developers to extend and expand its capabilities: Addins and Extensions.

Palm settles with FTC

CNET News.com reports Palm has reached a settlement with the FTC, which had accused Palm of not making clear its claims that its PDAs come with built-in wireless access to the Internet and to email. The FTC felt Palm wasn’t adequetly disclosing the fact that most models require the owner to buy a separate wireless modem or a device to connect the PDA to a mobile phone. Under the settlement, Palm will now clearly disclose that consumers need to buy add-ons for some models in order to access the Internet and email.

PacMan for Palm OS review

Palm Boulevard has a review of PacMan for the Palm OS. According to the review, “Horace Ho has created a very authentic PacMan experience with his Palm OS version of the game. You can play one or two players and there is even a turbo mode for advanced players. The game is available for monochrome as well as color devices.”

Two new Clies released

CNET News.com reports Sony released the Clie PEG-NR70V and PEG-NR70, utilizing the Palm OS, and featureing a flip cover that opens to reveal a 320-pixel-by-480-pixel color screen and a keyboard. They also come with an integrated digital audio player, 16MB of memory, and a 66MHz Motorola Dragonball SuperVZ processor. According to the article, The NR70V is distinguished from the NR70 by an integrated digital camera, which is built into the hinge of the device.
