CRN reports IBM unveiled WebSphere Everyplace Anywhere, a wireless mobile middleware solution that provides a mobile server, device management, and development tools to extend applications to a variety of mobile devices.

The general availability of Simplicity for Mobile Servers was announced at JAVA ONE Expo 2002, by Data Representations, Inc. This new rapid application development software was shown for the first time in the Data Representations booth. Data Representations & Cingular built integrated server and Palm applications for attendees then sent responses and requests via PalmNet to a server based in New Jersey. The demonstration was a proof statement for how quickly and efficiently the network operates and how easy it is to program applications and servlets in a J2EE and J2ME Java Enterprise Environment using Simplicity for Mobile Servers rapid application development tools.

Cutting Edge Software, Inc. announced that a demonstration of its soon-to-be-released Quickoffice Conference wireless collaboration tool for Palm OS handhelds was prominently featured during the keynote address at the PalmSource Japan Forum in Kioicho, Tokyo on March 28. As they did at the PalmSource Conference in San Jose, California in February, representatives of PalmSource, Inc. demonstrated the peer-to-peer collaborative capabilities of Quickoffice Conference during the keynote address of David Nagel, PalmSource president and CEO.

According to GfK, an international market research organization, Palm, Inc. has further strengthened its leadership position in the European handheld computing market. The results place Palm firmly in the lead with 42.5 percent of the handheld device market (as measured by units) for December/January 2002–30.8 points ahead of its nearest competitor. These results show an increase in market share of 4.4 points on the previous period of October/November 2001 and growth of 1.6 points on the same period a year ago.

PalmSource, Inc. announced it will host two-day developer conferences in Berlin, Paris, and London. Called the PalmSource Europe Forum Series, the conferences will help developers take full advantage of the potential of Palm OS. Independent software vendors, corporate in-house developers, and systems integrators will learn about the advanced wireless, security, and multimedia capabilities of Palm OS 5.

Paragon Software announced public disclosure of its Palm OS localization technology. Palm OS localization API (PiLoc API) allows third-party developers to use in their applications all features of mutli-language support, provided by PiLoc localization technology: national fonts, Graffiti, national keyboard layouts, national text encoding etc.
