.AUTHOR Steve Niles
For us here at PalmPower, the annual PalmSource event (at http://www.palmsource.com) is like a second Christmas because that’s where Palm, Inc. and its partners make a huge number of exciting new product announcements. It’s also where the company leaders spell out their visions for the coming year and let us know what we have to look forward to over the coming months. For the first time, PalmSource is open to the general public, so it’s time to book your tickets for sunny California right now. Here’s why.
If you’re a fan of Palm, Inc.’s products or if you’re looking to learn more about how Palm OS products and accessories can fit into your life, then the PalmSource Conference & Expo is the place to be. This annual event is being hosted by the Palm OS subsidiary, and there you’ll learn how recent innovations in the Palm OS will power the next-generation of mobile devices and applications. You’ll also get to see the largest exhibition of Palm OS devices, accessories, and software programs in the world.
This year PalmSource is being held at the San Jose Convention Center in California from February 5 to 8. If you haven’t gone before, this is the year to go, particularly if you’re interested in enterprise applications for Palm handhelds, as the focus on the enterprise user is going to be stronger than ever. A special PalmSource Enterprise Seminar has been set up, tailored for executives and business professionals looking for ways to use Palm OS solutions for business gain.
.H1 The Developer Conference
For developers, PalmSource is a tremendous resource as you’ll learn how you can optimize the impact on your development investment, and you’ll learn how you can be more competitive in your marketplace. You’ll also learn how to gain access to the people you need to meet. Through strategic keynotes, sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on labs, solutions consulting clinics, and informal marketing, the PalmSource Developer Conference will provide all those valuable lessons.
The Developer Conference is organized into six tracks: Palm OS Core Technologies, Devices and Hardware Expansion, Wireless Technologies, Optimizing and Extending Applications, Enterprise Development, and Marketing and Support.
.H2 Track One: Palm OS
Track One gives you a look at the present and the future. This track will bring you up to speed on the very latest technology, and you’ll get a preview of what’s to come. You’ll get updates on core Palm OS features, and you’ll be the first to hear about new and expanded APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). You’ll also get details on future Palm OS revisions.
.H2 Track Two: Devices and Hardware Expansion
The entire Palm OS technical community is working together to make a stronger platform. In Track Two, you’ll get a variety of sessions on new device and expansion capabilities, including how to best take advantage of licensee-specific hardware and how to extend your existing Palm OS application to run from expansion cards.
.H2 Track Three: Wireless Technologies
The sessions in Track Three cover the core technical content and tools you need to create wireless solutions for the Internet, corporate networks, and soon, personal networks. In this track, Palm presents design issues and API implementation around connection media including Bluetooth, 802.11, and IR SIMS, as well as Internet access for 1-piece, 2-piece, and 2-device solutions.
.H2 Track Four: Optimizing and Extending Applications
The sessions in Track Four will help you make your good code even better with the help of great techniques like streamlining your code and perfecting your user interface, memory usage, and usability. You’ll get tips about the best techniques for VFS (Virtual File System), color, and wireless connections, as well as "how-to" instructions for preparing your application for the global market.
.H2 Track Five: Enterprise Development
Enterprise development is a booming marketplace, and in Track Five, you’ll see why the Palm OS is the platform of choice for the enterprise. Experts will share their experiences with enterprise-wide handheld technology in sessions covering accessing corporate email, connecting to the Intranet, security, managing mobility, and creating solutions for field sales, field service, healthcare, financial services, education, and government organizations. For more information, read on for the section on the PalmSource Enterprise Seminar.
.H2 Track Six: Marketing and Support
Two big components of software development are finding your customers and supporting them once you’ve found them. The sessions and roundtables in Track Six will present strategies for attracting customers in existing and emerging markets. You’ll also learn how to address end-user support concerns and keep the end-user happy for the long-term. Additional sessions outline how the Palm OS developer support team and Platform licensees are structured to support their customer base: you, the Palm OS developer.
.H1 Enterprise Seminars
For enterprise users, such as CIOs and IT managers, business professionals and strategic planners, educators, and power mobile device users, PalmSource will hold a lot of valuable opportunities as well. You have the chance to network, share experiences and ideas, and get a first look at the new technological innovations that will help you lead your business in the twenty-first century.
According to a study by Winn Technology Group, 85 percent of Fortune 1000 companies with a mobile device standard have selected the Palm OS. Palm OS devices are being brought into enterprises by the thousands, causing IT organizations to place them on standards lists. To take advantage of this growing market, enterprise solution providers are adapting existing applications and developing new ones designed to take advantage of the mobile platform. Meanwhile, Palm’s licensees and partners are customizing devices to meet the needs of specific industries.
What this means for you is more options when choosing the range of solutions that are right for your company. While this has obvious advantages, the down side is you could become overwhelmed by all the different choices. That’s what makes an event like PalmSource such a great opportunity. You’ll have the chance to speak with developers and marketers first-hand to better sort out the pros and cons of the various solutions you’ll discover.
At the PalmSource Enterprise Seminar, you’ll get an in-depth look at topics related to enterprise mobile solutions, including email, connecting to the Internet and corporate intranets, security solutions for the Palm OS platform, managing mobility, optimizing and extending applications, enterprise development, and marketing and support. Sessions will include case studies outlining how companies have improved business processes and achieved a competitive advantage from Palm OS solutions, and they will highlight real-world solutions and bottom-line results from industry leaders. You’ll also get to take a tour of some of the best vertical solutions available with personal demonstrations and mini-theater presentations.
