CNET News.com reports Handspring is scrapping its proprietary Springboard technology–the first technology that promised to make handhelds expandable into cell phones, digital cameras, and any number of other gadgets. According to the article, with its latest round of Treo devices, announced Tuesday, Handspring began supporting Secure Digital, which, though later to arrive on the scene, has gained a stronger foothold in the industry.

AppForge, Inc. announced the immediate availability of their newest mobile application development software. Recently re-branded “MobileVB”, this release includes new features such as Short Message Service (SMS) and Telephony.

Electric Pocket released Pixer, MMS Picture Messaging Application, for Palm OS. Pixer is designed to enable users to send photos and sketches to mobile phones and email from wireless handhelds. Pixer can send annotated picture messages and photographs from wireless handheld devices to any email address or mobile telephone equipped with MMS capabilities.

Palm Infocenter reports Sony Japan has announced the Clie PEG-T650C. According to the article, “The T650C is essentially an updated version of the T600C and includes an MP3/ATRAC3 player. It uses a slightly improved screen but does not have virtual Graffiti and sports the 66 Mhz Dragonball SuperVZ processor.”

Forbes.com has an article on how wireless may not necessarily be everything when it comes to PDAs, despite what market analysts tend to say in unison. As evidence, they point to the new Treo 90, which has a color screen and a few other enhancements “but no wireless phone, nor any means of connecting to the Internet. It’s just a plain old PDA, which is fine if that’s all you want.”

Handspring, Inc. also introduced the Treo 90, a lightweight organizer with a built-in keyboard and a full-color display. Treo 90 expands the Treo family of handhelds to now include organizers as well as communicators. Based on the design of the Treo communicators, Treo 90 comes with 16 MB of memory, Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard expansion capabilities, and a long-lasting rechargeable battery. It is available for $299 Handspring.com and within the next few weeks at retail stores across the country. Treo 90 will also become available in the upcoming months in Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and Korea.
