SplashClock released

SplashData, Inc. announced SplashClock, an application that automatically runs when your handheld is charging in its cradle and displays a semi-transparent clock with a slideshow of personal images in the background. SplashClock runs on all color handhelds running Palm OS 3.5 or later and can be purchased at an introductory price of $5.00.

Pocket Quicken 2.03 released

LandWare, Inc. has enhanced its financial management tool, releasing Pocket Quicken version 2.03. New features and maintenance fixes include OS 5.0 compatibility, Tungsten T compatibility, iproved bitmap support for high density displays, improved category matching for budget summaries, Macintosh error code reporting on handheld now correctly matches conduit, adding an account budget sets the type (income/expense) to match the current budget view, built-in calculator supports operator priority in chained calculations, split transfers now correctly set the child transaction type, transaction trim reminder now correctly refreshes register display, and miscellaneous small bug fixes.

Sybase, IBM, and AppForge

Sybase and IBM, have integrated AppForge technology into their mobile database products. Both companies have utilized AppForge’s Piedmont Framework to enable this technology integration. IBM’s product, DB2 Everyplace, integrates with AppForge MobileVB to let Microsoft Visual Basic developers create sophisticated mobile device applications that use the DB2 Everyplace relational database and synchronization technology. This technology supports devices based on Palm OS, Symbian OS (Nokia 9200 Communicator series), or Pocket PC based devices.

New Datastick software

Datastick Systems introduces software for science and industry to take full advantage of new Palm Tungsten T handhelds for sensor-based data acquisition, enabling faster measurements and more precise display of data transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth or via Datastick peripherals. Working either through Bluetooth wireless technology or through Datastick’s DAS-1245 snap-on peripheral with Palm’s Universal Connector, data is acquired, recorded, and displayed from sensors measuring temperature, pressure, vibration, rates of acceleration, etc., on up to four input channels. Measurements are displayed in a number of ways using one of three Datastick Connection software programs running on the handheld.

Qvadis awarded

Qvadis has received the first Innovative Technology Achievement Award by the Digital Literature Institute, organizer of the 2002 Independent e-Book Awards. Winners were announced during the inaugural Digital Literature Festival recently held in Santa Barbara, California. Judges included Martin Eberhard, former CEO and co-founder of NuvoMedia, creators of the revolutionary Rocket eBook, and other industry luminaries. Qvadis was recognized for Innovative Technology Achievement, an award presented for the development of software, hardware, or technical information that benefits the field of digital literature. Finalists in the category included E-Ink, developers of electronic paper technology, and OverDrive, developers of ReaderWorks publishing tools for Microsoft Reader.

RIM and Handspring agreement

Research In Motion Limited (RIM) and Handspring, Inc. announced that they have signed an agreement in principle setting out the fundamental terms under which RIM will license certain RIM keyboard patents to Handspring. Specific terms of the royalty-bearing license were not disclosed. RIM has agreed to dismiss its pending litigation against Handspring following the execution of a definitive agreement.

Air2Web and ADC selected

Air2Web and its customer ADC, a supplier of network equipment, software, and systems integration services, have been selected as one of ten finalists for Aberdeen Group’s new research report, “What Works: Ten Significant Mobile Data Deployments.” Aberdeen Group is a provider of technology market consulting and research. This report examines and evaluates the overall market dynamics and the success factors behind mobile data deployments using handheld devices. The finalists were chosen on the criteria that the wireless deployments brought significant and quantifiable benefits to enterprise users.
