Close on the heels of the introduction of two new products aggressively priced and positioned against HP and Sony handhelds, Palm, Inc. announced a Trade Up Program. The program encourages handheld buyers to replace competitors’ products or upgrade existing Palm handhelds. Consumers will receive a $50 rebate on the purchase of any Tungsten or Zire 71 handheld when they trade in their old handheld. This promotion coincides with results from head-to-head testing by an independent lab, in which Palm Tungsten handhelds equaled or outperformed HP Pocket PC devices in all tests.

Those attending this year’s BookExpo America (BEA) conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center may want to stop by the Palm Digital Media, Inc. booth on May 30 for a high-tech ebook signing with New York Times best-selling fantasy writer Tad Williams. Williams will be at the Palm Digital Media booth located in the show’s eBook Experience pavilion from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. May 31 to sign copies of The War of the Flowers, a contemporary novel set in Northern California, and also in the strange parallel world that coexists in the farthest reaches of the imagination. Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands unveiled its newest product targeting the burgeoning camera-phone market–a module that includes two color displays and a VGA camera. Dubbed the Compact Clam Color Camera (C4) Module, this new addition to Philips’ portfolio is designed to satisfy OEM demand for highly integrated display modules that can be quickly and easily added to new mobile phones to create feature-rich products. The C4 features a thin-film transistor (TFT) color main display, a color super-twisted nematic (CSTN) sub-display, and a VGA camera.

JAMDAT Mobile Inc. announced that it is acquiring Hexacto Games Inc., a provider of games for Palm, Pocket PC, and next-generation 3G phone platforms. As a result of the acquisition, JAMDAT will add Hexacto’s entire library of original and branded titles to its slate, integrate Hexacto’s Montreal-based development team into its publishing business, and broaden its leadership to additional mobile entertainment platforms.
