
PalmGear announced the release of StreamLync, a breakthrough auto-install utility designed to facilitate the software download and install process for users of handhelds and smart phones running on the Palm OS platform. Offered as a public beta program beginning February 18, 2003, StreamLync is a free application available only from the PalmGear.com Web site. StreamLync, a patent-pending application, eliminates a number of steps typically involved with Palm OS application download and installation, especially the use of common unzip and installation tools.

GPS receivers are great tools for street directions and noting location. But once you go off-road, into the woods or on the water, the GPS maps do not show the features that you really need, like the lay of the land or depth of the water in a realistic way. Maptech has a new solution that combines Palm OS devices with a clip-on GPS to display Maptech’s USGS topographic maps and NOAA nautical charts. The Maptech Outdoor Navigator is designed for land surveyors, utility workers, real estate professionals, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, foresters; as well as hikers, hunters, boaters, fishermen, and outdoor adventurers.

Action Engine and Handspring announced plans to bring Action Engine’s software tools for advanced over-the-air provisioning and device management to Handspring’s Treo family of communicators through cooperative marketing and sales efforts. Action Engine’s tools are designed to simplify device configuration and registration, software maintenance, service provisioning, security, wireless data backup and restore, applications downloads, and more.

PalmSource, Inc., Handango, and WideRay, a platform provider for on-premises wireless service management, announced a partnership to enable point-of-sale software distribution solutions for mobile network operators. Under the terms of the new “Beam-Me-App” program, PalmSource will provide an in-store software solution that combines Handango’s software and provisioning technology with WideRay Jacks to create easily deployable beaming kiosks in mobile operator stores. The “Beam-Me-App” programme is customisable for each operator to configure software catalogues and ensure compatibility with backend infrastructure.

Air2Web announced it is now enabling UPS customers in nine Asian Pacific countries to track their packages anytime, anywhere via UPS’s new SMS (Short Message Service) Tracking Service. Since 2000, UPS customers in the United States have had the ability to wirelessly track their packages, locate drop boxes, and determine transit rates, with the help of Air2Web.

CREDANT TECHNOLOGIES announced that it has added support for laptops, tablets, and smartphones to its existing coverage of PDA devices in the 3.0 release of CREDANT Mobile Guardian. CREDANT Mobile Guardian is designed to fill the security gaps created by mobile devices.
