Quanta Computer is developing a PDA handset for Dell, and the new model is expected to be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, according to industry sources.

Quanta said it would not comment on any issue concerning individual clients.

The sources claimed that the Dell PDA handset project, codenamed “Fly,” will develop a model using the Windows Mobile 6 Professional platform and supporting HSDPA. It probably will feature a QWERTY keyboard, though feature details have yet to be determined, the sources said.

Quanta, which is the biggest notebook supplier for Dell, is actively developing products for the PDA handset and 3G phone market, and it currently supplies handsets for Hewlett Packard (HP) and O2. Although the size of Quanta’s handset business is smaller than High Tech Computer (HTC), its position as an ODM without its own-brand business or collaboration with telecom carriers has allowed it to win the Dell PDA handset project, the sources commented.

What is unique for an enterprise drive is a rotary vibration controller plus a drop sensor that parks the head if free fall acceleration is detected.

Oracle’s customer relationship management applications are now available on BlackBerry smartphones from Research in Motion.

Oracle announced April 12 its namesake Siebel Wireless support for RIM’s smart phones. With Siebel Wireless on the BlackBerry platform, mobile workers will have access to real-time CRM data, officials said.

In addition to having access to corporate e-mail and their CRM applications, users will be able to manage customer interactions and service tasks. At the same time, users can push notifications or data to any other user via the BlackBerry push-based e-mail, voice and text messaging channels.

The ongoing drama of Palm’s apparent search for a buyer took a new twist as rumors surfaced that Dell, which has discontinued its Axim line of Windows Mobile PDAs, might be interested in the beleaguered Treo vendor.

It’s not clear where the rumor originated, but it’s floating through the blogosphere and at least one analyst has told Computerworld that he thinks it makes sense. A Dell spokeswoman told Hamblen she couldn’t comment on the rumor, which always makes such speculation sound more likely.
