PhatWare announced the release of CalliGrapher 8.5. The award-winning handwriting recognition software for Windows-Mobile devices includes a Write Pad SIP and is now optimized to support Windows Mobile 6.0, including full-VGA and Square QVGA square screen devices.

Named the best software for handwriting recognition for Microsoft Windows Mobile based Pocket PCs by industry experts for five consecutive years, CalliGrapher analyzes pen strokes written in any application window or in the designated Write Pad area, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. Employing advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques, CalliGrapher recognizes arbitrary alphanumeric strings, as well as words contained in its integrated dictionary.

Palm announced that an update to the Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system will be available for Treo 750 smartphone customers around the world. The Treo 750 is available from carriers in the United States, Europe, and Asia and remains a key part of Palm’s international expansion strategy to make Treo smartphones available to more customers. For AT&T customers, the update also will facilitate HSDPA (High-speed Downlink Packet Access) capability–allowing faster data-download speeds on 3G/UMTS/HSDPA networks.

Research In Motion announced it is adding additional Application Programming Interfaces to the BlackBerry Java Development Environment to enable the next wave in mobile application development.

After having listened to audiotapes that execs found “painful,” Microsoft has owned up to the fact that some of its Xbox Live support center agents have fallen for pretexting and have given away personal information that could have potentially enabled pretexters to hijack accounts.

“The [Xbox Live] network isn’t being hacked–[but] through working with [security researcher] Kevin Finisterre, we found out that people were socially engineering or pretexting our support center agents,” said Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, in an interview with eWEEK.

Motion Computing has unveiled the LE1700, the company’s latest flagship slate tablet PC. The most feature-rich tablet PC on the market, the LE1700 integrates the latest technologies aimed at enhancing productivity of mobile professionals in healthcare, field sales and service, government and hospitality, among others. New technologies available on the LE1700 include Motion’s exclusive WriteTouch display option for dual-mode writing and touch-screen input, Wireless Wide Area Network integration, the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, and Intel Core 2 Duo mobile technology.

The first day after Apple TV began shipping a bunch of sharp-as-a-tack coder types hacked Apple’s new set top box to shreds.

Non-Apple TV owners can enjoy the out of box experience by viewing the opening video which one crafty person ripped from the hard drive and posted in all of it’s 720p glory. You can also download the Quartz Composer Screen Saver and the Now Playing Screen. And if you’re truly hard-core you can download the entire Apple TV OS, and (conceivably) install it on another Mac.
