New chipmaking technique

ZDNet reports IBM’s microelectronics division will reveal a new chipmaking technique it calls “strained silicon.” According to the article, the technique adds a lattice-like layer of IBM’s silicon-germanium blend to the chip, which helps to increase the efficiency of its transistors. This should significantly reduce the power consumption of chips used in handheld devices, IBM executives say.

Handspring cuts outlook

Handspring, Inc. updated the outlook for its financial performance for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year ending June 30, 2001. The company now expects revenues for Q4 to be in the range of $60 to $65 million. Handspring reported $123.8 million in revenues in Q3 2001.

Handspring’s product trade-up

Handspring, Inc. introduced a product trade-up program through which handheld computer owners can exchange almost any handheld computer for $100 toward the purchase of Handspring’s Visor Edge. Customers who already own a Handspring Visor handheld can pass it on to a friend or family member and receive the same $100 to put toward a new Visor Edge. The trade-up program is effective beginning Friday, June 8 for a limited time at Handspring.com. Additionally, Handspring will make the program available to handheld owners during TECHXNY (formerly PC Expo), June 26-28 in New York City.

Varadero 2.0 shipping

Abaco announced that it has begun shipping version 2.0 of its Varadero mobile application development framework and thin-client server. The new version of the technology platform is designed to provide an open standards-based, fully graphical development environment for creating applications that connect enterprise front and back-ends to the mobile user in real-time.
