Handspring admits mistakes

PalmInfocenter reports Ed Colligan, Handspring’s chief operating officer, admitted that leaving color out of the Visor Edge was a mistake, according to an article published this weekend by The San Francisco Chronicle. The article also talks about a forthcoming product from Handspring that will include wireless capabilities built-in.

Doctors embrace Active ECG

Free registration is required to read this New York Times article on The Active Corporation’s portable heart monitor for use with Palm handheld devices. Called the Active ECG, the unit includes electrodes that attach to the patient, plus a cable that attaches to a Palm handheld. According to the article, the device “sends recorded heart data to the Palm computer where it can be viewed, printed, or transmitted by wired, and eventually, wireless modem to a doctor or perhaps a hospital emergency room.”

Metricom shutting down

Excite.com reports Metricom Inc., a wireless high-speed Internet provider that filed for bankruptcy protection last month, is shutting down its Ricochet network and laying off 282 employees. According to the article, the network will be turned off Wednesday in all 15 markets where service is currently offered.

Documents To Go 4.0

DataViz, Inc. and Palm, Inc. announced Documents To Go Professional Edition Version 4.0, which enables Palm handheld users to create, view, and edit Word and Excel documents and view PowerPoint presentations in one complete package. Mobile professionals now will have the ability to view PowerPoint files with a new application called Slideshow To Go.

Other improvements in Version 4.0 include the ability to create and edit Excel-compatible spreadsheets with Sheet To Go, save and synchronize large documents directly to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard media using Palm m500 series handhelds, and synchronize documents between multiple computers. DataViz’s DocSync technology provides seamless synchronization by giving users the freedom to make changes on their handhelds without losing the desktop document’s original formatting after synchronization.
