Samsung and the Memory Stick

CNET News.com reports Samsung announced its plans to develop products that use Sony’s flash-memory format, Memory Stick. According to the article, the two companies have not yet signed an agreement, but one is expected soon.

Metricom shutting down

Excite.com reports Metricom Inc., a wireless high-speed Internet provider that filed for bankruptcy protection last month, is shutting down its Ricochet network and laying off 282 employees. According to the article, the network will be turned off Wednesday in all 15 markets where service is currently offered.

Band giving away Palm m100

The Who We Are band, an independent songwriting band, has announced a Palm m100 computer giveaway drawing. One of the key members of the band, The Timinator, has been a big Palm handheld user for a long time. He felt that since the band is utilizing high technology via the use of the Internet for marketing and promotions, that it would make sense to offer a Palm handheld computer to the band’s fans. The only requirement for entering the drawing, to be held on August 31st, 2001, is to join the band’s email list.

Documents To Go 4.0

DataViz, Inc. and Palm, Inc. announced Documents To Go Professional Edition Version 4.0, which enables Palm handheld users to create, view, and edit Word and Excel documents and view PowerPoint presentations in one complete package. Mobile professionals now will have the ability to view PowerPoint files with a new application called Slideshow To Go.

Other improvements in Version 4.0 include the ability to create and edit Excel-compatible spreadsheets with Sheet To Go, save and synchronize large documents directly to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard media using Palm m500 series handhelds, and synchronize documents between multiple computers. DataViz’s DocSync technology provides seamless synchronization by giving users the freedom to make changes on their handhelds without losing the desktop document’s original formatting after synchronization.

Scott E. Jordan, a corporate lawyer and a mobile professional, has invented the SCOTT eVEST. The lightweight, 15-pocket vest. The vest features a patent pending Personal Area Network (PAN) powered by the :]-PAN-TECH-[: system. The :]-PAN-TECH-[: system consists of concealed conduits which allow connections from cellphones to hands-free headsets, MP3/CD players to headphones, and handheld devices to each other. The PAN runs throughout the SCOTT eVEST, holding wires in place with Velcro.

Ludigames is releasing a game-pack for the Palm OS. This 5-game-pack offers a wide variety of styles ranging from shoot’em’up game (Saturn Strike) to boxing (Toxic Boxing), dancing (Weecky Weecky Dance) and logic games (Atomino). They have also included an exotic beach volley-ball game (Summer Volley).

Red-M Blade shipping

Yahoo has an article from Information Week on Red-M Communications which began shipping its Red-M Blade, a Bluetooth clip-on for the Palm Vx handheld computer. The Red-M Blade uses Bluetooth’s short-range wireless standard to connect to a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone and provide access to email, calendars, and the Internet. The device also can connect to PCs and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. It’s priced at $199.

Parachute PC Card adapter

Parachute Technologies announced the release of the Parachute PC Card adapter designed for Palm handhelds. Parachute III clips on a Palm III series organizer allowing it to accept any Type II PC Card or Compact Flash Card through the use of a CF Card to PC Card converter.
