Yankowski resigns as CEO

Palm, Inc. announced that Carl Yankowski has decided to resign as chief executive officer. Eric Benhamou, Palm chairman of the board, will serve in his place until a permanent successor is named. A search has begun for a new CEO of Palm, Inc. The company also announced that it is in the final stages of its internal separation into two businesses.

Solutions Group team assembled

Palm, Inc. announced that Todd Bradley, Palm executive vice president and Solutions Group chief operating officer, has completed his Solutions Group management team. With the hiring of Glenn Cross to head America’s Sales and Service efforts and Steve Manser to lead Palm engineering, Bradley has assembled a strong executive team to ensure Palm’s continued leadership in the handheld market.

The Solutions Group is responsible for designing and delivering the Palm family of products and manages Palm branded hardware add-ons, software, and accessories.

New issue Friday

Some of you have expressed concern or curiosity about why the new issue of PalmPower isn’t out yet. The deep, dark secret is that our senior editors were attending a seminar in Hawaii (yep, it’s that good to be an editor here at ZATZ!) and we just got back in town. We’re finishing edits and the new issue is due up on Friday.

ActiveECG demo available

Active Corporation just released a demo version of the ActiveECG software on their Web site. The demo program shows 13 different rhythms (normal plus 12 arrhythmias) on the Palm handheld without any additional hardware. It shows exactly what viewing a real-time EKG would look like on your Palm handheld.

Chapura, Inc. has unveiled Cloak, which allows you to enter, update, find, and share credit card and bank account numbers, Web site passwords, system logons, inventory identification numbers, and other vital information, incorporating strong encryption technology (128-bit) to keep your data secure. For added safety, it also requires that the user name and password for the Cloak desktop and the handheld applications match.

WorldMate 8.0 released

MobiMate has announced the release of WorldMate 8.0 for Palm OS devices. The new version includes on-line weather forecasts for over 75 cities worldwide. The current addition of world weather forecasts, supplied by AccuWeather, allows a user to obtain weather information through the HotSync process or using a wireless modem.

Handhelds in medicine explored

Metaworks is collaborating with the Medical Society of Nova Scotia to explore how handheld computing technology can improve patient data management and access to reference material. A joint proposal to Palm Canada has been approved and 20 new Palm m500 series devices have been made available for investigation purposes by physicians.

New programs at PalmSource

Palm, Inc. unveiled a new format for the PalmSource Conference and Expo, which is set for February 5-8, 2002, at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. PalmSource will include two new programs: an Enterprise Seminar for CIOs, IT decision-makers and business professionals; and a new PalmSource Expo, where Palm enthusiasts can see demonstrations of Palm OS devices, accessories, and a wide variety of the more than 12,000 available Palm OS based applications.
