Hewlett-Packard has built an electronic data-entry tablet for India and other nations that use non-Western alphabets. The tablet was among HP Labs India inventions intended to “help grow opportunities in rapidly expanding economies,” according to the Palo Alto, California-based technology company. According to a global survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and security specialist Symantec, converged voice-data handhelds, otherwise known as smartphones, are widely perceived to be must-have business tools, but concerns about security are hampering their adoption in the enterprise. The survey’s findings indicated that some 60 percent of companies are holding back on smartphone deployments because of fears that data on the devices can be compromised.
