Microsoft has defended the digital rights management systems integrated into its new Vista operating system. It follows reports that Vista would “downgrade” the quality of all video and audio, if they were not output via approved connections on the PC. Microsoft said only the quality of “premium content” would be lowered, and only if requested by copyright holders. The measures are in place, says the firm, to protect content such as high definition movies from being copied.

Laplink officially released its Vista-compatible version of PCmover, the only utility that automatically moves programs as well as data files and settings from an old PC to a new PC. Users of PCmover can migrate from a PC running Windows 95 or any later version to any other version of Windows, including Vista. PCmover even allows for migrations to a Macintosh running Parallels or Apple’s Boot Camp. Any version of PCmover already purchased can be upgraded free of charge. Users simply to need to use the “Check for Update” functionality available in PCmover after installation on their old and new PCs to download the Vista compatible version of PCmover.

Intel has confirmed plans to ship its next-generation wireless chips ahead of its previous schedule for bringing 802.11n wireless to its Centrino program. The Next-Gen Wireless-N product will appear in notebooks from companies such as Acer, Gateway and Toshiba by the end of this month, Dave Hofer, director of wireless marketing for the company, said Tuesday. The new Wi-Fi chip is based on the draft 802.11n wireless standard, which is on track to be finalized later this year. It will become the newest piece of Intel’s Centrino package of chips, which includes the Core 2 Duo processor, a mobile chipset and a wireless chip.

British drivers who insist on babbling away on handheld cell phones are facing a further crackdown as the government attempts to rid the UK’s roads of the dangerous practice. Starting February 27, motorists will face the threat of getting three points on their license as well a fine of about $118 (60 pounds). “Research shows that talking on a mobile phone while driving affects your concentration and ability to react to dangerous situations,” said Douglas Alexander, the U.K. Transport secretary. “It’s quite simple. It’s impossible to do two things at once and do them well.” A UK law outlawing driving while using a handheld mobile phone took effect in December 2003, resulting in the issuing of 74,000 tickets during the first full year, but many drivers are still flouting the rules.

Grammar lessons often are associated with high school drudgery–diagramming sentences and memorizing obscure rules in between passing notes in English class–but an Arizona technical writer has turned the seemingly dry subject into a popular podcast. Mignon Fogarty, the woman behind Grammar Girl’s Quick & Dirty Tips for Better Writing, has been explaining the finer points of commas, colons and split infinitives since July. Fogarty said she got the idea for the podcast, sort of an Internet radio show, during a California vacation. The show is currently the 47th most popular podcast on Apple’s iTunes service, right behind “Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day.” It has been as high as number two, Fogarty said. She said the shows have been downloaded more than 1.3 million times.
