Kaspersky Lab has discovered the first virus designed to infect iPod portable media players.

Dubbed Podloso, the virus is a file which can be launched and run on an iPod. It should be stressed that in order for the virus to function, Linux has to be installed on the iPod. If the virus is installed to the iPod by the user, the virus then installs itself to the folder which contains program demo versions. Podloso cannot be launched automatically without user involvement.

Once launched, the virus scans the device’s hard disk and infects all executable .elf format files. Any attempt to launch these files will cause the virus to display a message on the screen which says, “You are infected with Oslo the first iPodLinux Virus.”

You try to synchronize content from Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 to a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5-based device with AKU 2.3 or a later AKU. When you do this, the phone connects. However, only the internal storage on the phone is available in Windows Media Player as a synchronization target.

This issue occurs because the canonical name for Windows Mobile 5-based devices with AKU 2.3 and later AKUs is truncated in Microsoft Windows Media Device Manager. This hotfix eliminates a bug that causes this truncation to occur.

Yahoo has fixed a Yahoo Messenger flaw attackers could exploit to hijack targeted machines.

According to the French Security Incident Response Team, the problem is a buffer overflow error in the “AudioConf” ActiveX control (yacscom.dll) that surfaces when overly long arguments are passed along via the “createAndJoinConference()” method. Attackers could exploit this to run arbitrary commands by tricking a user into visiting a specially crafted Web page.

Yahoo Messenger 8 is affected, and users are advised to download the latest version.

Apple will ship its iPhone in June in the U.S., according to the company’s latest email campaign.

The company has written to users who have signed-up for more information about the device when it ships. The email–which is titled “talk to you soon”–promises customers: “Thanks for signing up. You’ll be the first to hear the latest about iPhone–coming this June. That gives you just enough time to think of ways to break the news to your current phone.”

A government agency said it will keep a rule in place that requires cell phones to be turned off during airline flights.

World of Warcraft players are being targeted by hackers exploiting flaws in how Windows handles animated cursors.

The flaw came to light in late March and lets attackers take over vulnerable PCs via booby-trapped websites.

Warcraft players seem to be one of the targets because accounts for the game are potentially worth significant sums of money.

Microsoft has issued a patch for the flaw early to combat the rising number of attacks.

Video blogger Joshua Wolf, who spent a record-setting stint behind bars for refusing to turn over his footage of a chaotic 2005 street protest, walked out of prison after cutting a deal with prosecutors.

Wolf, 24, said Tuesday he was looking forward to “pizza and a beer” after having spent 226 days in prison–more than any journalist who has refused to testify.

Under the deal with prosecutors, Wolf agreed to turn over the uncut video, which he also posted on his Web site Tuesday. But he refused to testify before the grand jury about the events at the protest or the identities of participants.
