Resco has released a major upgrade of its Resco Explorer 2007 for Palm OS. Resco Explorer is a file manager, zipper, viewer, launcher, backup tool and ftp explorer in one. It has an impressive range of features and customizable options. New to Explorer 2007 is fully transparent FTP integration, bookmarking of the favorites and a RAM Analyzer–a tool that helps to understand RAM and to identify old unneeded data files.

Next week, Symantec will broaden its mobile security product line by shipping new products designed for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile devices.

The software will come in two versions: a consumer product called Norton Mobile Security for Smartphones and Symantec Mobile Security 5.0, designed for enterprise users. Both versions will be available May 29, a company spokesman said Monday.

Symantec already sells a suite for phones based on the Symbian operating system, as well as antivirus software for Windows Mobile but these new products will support a much broader range of security features, Symantec said.

Western Digital said that it has begun shipping a 250GB version of its Scorpio 2.5-inch disk drive, pushing notebook PC storage capacities ever higher.

Available in capacities ranging from 40 to 250GB, the new WD drives feature a pair of new technologies, which the company calls “WhisperDrive” and “ShockGuard”. Prices on the new 250GB drives will be about $199, available from WD’s online store.

Stampede Technologies announced the release of new client software that accelerates enterprise users with Windows Mobile and Linux devices. The release of this new client software strengthens Stampede’s vision of accelerating all enterprise applications for all users. A first in the industry, this acceleration technology complements Stampede’s innovative client technology for Win32 Desktops and Laptops that has been deployed on tens of thousands of desktops worldwide. This new capability is now available as a standard feature with the Stampede Application Acceleration Series Release 2 solutions.

Dell plans to sell its first convertible tablet PC later this year. The PC maker revealed that it is working on the machine and showed a prototype of it on a company blog.

The tablet PC will be targeted at the education, health care and corporate markets. Tablet PCs still only account for a fraction of the portable PC market, but growth in the sector is expected to outperform the overall market over the next few years, according to IDC. Shipments of convertible tablet PCs like that planned by Dell are expected to total 1.5 million units this year, IDC said in a December 2006 report.

Apple has been hit with a class-action lawsuit by MacBook owners who claim the company falsely advertised the quality of the displays used in the notebooks. Two California men allege they were promised displays capable of showing “millions of colors,” but instead were sold displays of lesser quality that looked “grainy” and “sparkly.”

The suit alleges Apple misled them with MacBook and MacBook Pro advertising that claimed the displays are capable of 8 bits per channel, which may display as many as 16 million colors. Instead, the suit claims, Apple used displays in the MacBook that support only 6 bits per channel, offering about 262,144 colors.
