iQradio and iQtaxi announced

Qsent, Inc. announced the company’s first two products, iQradio and iQtaxi, will be available to Palm device users in Q3 2000. The iQradio service allows a user to find their favorite artist, sports team, talk show host, or network programming no matter where they are. The iQtaxi service is a taxi, sedan, and limousine Internet-based real-time reservation system.

AportisDoc Mobile Edition 2.2

Aportis Technologies Corp. announced that AportisDoc Mobile Edition 2.2 has been released and has received BackupBuddy Certification. New features include full support for Flash memory (along with Handspring Visor Springboard Flash Modules, TRG’s FlashPro software and Brayder Technologies’ JackFlash), beaming of documents, a new installer for Windows users, enhanced support for bookmark tracking in read only memory, as well as some bug fixes.

Palm VII in the lloop

SourceGear Corporation has released version 0.3.0 of its Open Source software toolkit for creating community portals, codenamed lloop. It consists of a server platform and a collection of ready-for-use ASP-like scripts that produce dynamic content for display on a variety of devices, such as desktop PC’s, WAP Phones, and the Palm VII handheld.

Streaming video on Pocket PC

Ofer Shmueli at BrightHand has an article on streaming video on the Pocket PC. According to the article, companies like PacketVideo and Net2Wireless can make this happen at speeds as low as 9.6 kbps over current cellular networks. The article looks at the offerings from both these companies.

New version of PocketDos

There’s a new version of PocketDOS available. It’s an MS-DOS 6.22 compatible DOS for Windows CE-based devices. PocketDOS allows the user to install and run DOS programs and access devices such as touchscreens, built-in and external modems, IR ports, flash disks, and network drives from within DOS and DOS programs.

CNET News reports McAfee has begun offering antivirus software called McAfee VirusScan Handheld to protect devices from the threat of bugs written for handheld computers. The software doesn’t run on the handheld itself, rather it runs on the desktop computer and scans the handheld device when files on the PC and handheld are synchronized.

Yahoo has an article from Reuters saying Sharp Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. may jointly develop a new handheld computer with mobile phone functions. The device would target the European market and use Europe’s GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications) standard.
