
CNET News.com reports on a speech made at PalmSource by Palm’s vice president of product planning and strategy, Michael Mace. In the speech, Mace said third-party providers were working on MP3 playback capabilities, enhanced multimedia, and higher-resolution screens.

Palm, Inc. and AppForge, Inc. announced that Palm has obtained a license to distribute AppForge Booster runtime software. When installed on a handheld computer using the Palm OS platform, the Booster software enables users to run VB applications developed for the Palm OS using the AppForge development platform and Microsoft Visual Basic.

Palm, Inc. has issued a press release saying Chief Executive Officer Carl Yankowski laid out his vision for handheld computing and announced several important new technology plans and relationships at PalmSource 2000. Among Yankowski’s announcements were the following:
A range of new wireless modems and integrated wireless handhelds are coming for the Palm platform. In 2001, Palm Powered handhelds will be able to access most of the world’s major wireless networks, including CDPD, CDMA, GSM, GPRS, PDC, and Mobitex;
Samsung became a new licensee of the Palm OS platform. Samsung is developing a new Palm OS-based smartphone for release in the first half of 2001. With the addition of Samsung, the Palm OS is now supported by several leaders in mobile phones, including Nokia, Motorola, and Kyocera;
The Palm Economy Association will debut later in the year. Independently elected officers will lead it, and two-way feedback will be facilitated on technical and OS issues. A marketing committee will leverage the power of the platform.

Metrowerks is teaming up with technology partners to provide an out-of-box solution for developing applications that connect Java-enabled wireless devices–such as handhelds, two-way pagers, and smart phones–to enterprise databases and applications. The solution, which Metrowerks plans to make available in the first quarter of 2001, will combine the CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and tool set with tested third-party components

Clarinet Systems, Inc. and IS/Complete, Inc. have entered into a strategic alliance to market turnkey solutions utilizing each others technology. The first such solution developed by IS/Complete on Clarinet Systems platform will be WebBeamCast which will be launched at the PalmSource 2000 conference at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

Infinity Softworks Inc. announced new versions of its financial and business solutions.

Centura Software Corp. announced the newest version of its Mobile Application Platform (eSNAPP 3.0). It’s designed to enable mobile users to access enterprise data and applications.
