Clie N710C update

Palm Boulevard reports Sony has made an official announcement regarding the procedure for updating a Clie N710C From Palm OS 3.5.2 to Palm OS 4.1. According to the article, the update procedure must be done by a Sony Technician and will cost $50.

Yankowski admits mistakes

Palm Boulevard has an article on Palm’s annual shareholder meeting at which Palm CEO Carl Yankowski acknowledged that “Palm, like much of the handheld industry, had made mistakes in the past year.” According to the article, Palm will attempt to recover from these mistakes with two new ad campaigns.

New Handspring devices announced

Handspring, Inc. introduced the Treo family of compact communicators, combining a mobile phone, wireless email, messaging and Web browsing, and a Palm OS organizer in a small, lightweight device. Treo will be available in two versions: the Treo 180, featuring a built-in keyboard for text input, and the Treo 180g for those who prefer Graffiti text input. Both will be available in early 2002 for an estimated street price of $399 with GSM service activation.

Handspring and Visto

Visto Corporation and Handspring announced an agreement for the co-development of a wireless email solution for Handspring’s new Treo communicators. Expected in Spring 2002, the solution will provide Treo users with automatic delivery and remote management of corporate desktop email, such as that from Microsoft Exchange and Internet-based POP3 email.

LAPUG meets tomorrow

The next meeting of the Los Angeles Palm User Group will be on Saturday, October 13th at Border’s Books & Music at 1360 Westwood Blvd. It’s just a couple of blocks north of Santa Monica Blvd. They’ll be upstairs in a meeting area located within the Music Department – close to the Coffee Shop. The meeting will start at 10:30am. The October meeting will feature Lorin Wiener of SharperMinds Software and author of About-Face.

Chicago gets coding!

The next meeting of the Chicago Palm Programmers Group is Wednesday, October 17th. Aaron Vesperman will present on his experience developing the Springboard Module for the The Vezmen Project, a top ten winner in the “Cool Module Design Contest” sponsored by Xilinx, Handspring and Portable Design Magazine. Karen Jeffrey will also be finishing up her Java Conduit talk from last month. The meeting will be on Wednesday, October 17th at 6:30 pm. They’ll meet at DePaul University’s loop campus in room 436a of the CS&T building at 243 South Wabash (the corner of Jackson and Wabash). It sounds like fun, since the organizers have asked us to tell you to leave plenty of time to eat pizza and chat.
