
Research in Motion (RIM) has released a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange to fix a series of security vulnerabilities. Internet.com says that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is a crucial part of RIM’s push into the enterprise PDA market. The Enterprise Server lets IT departments connect Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes/Domino servers to a wireless carrier to allow for corporate email delivery.

Sharp has released in the United States a new ultrathin notebook that boasts wireless networking support. News.com reports that the Actius AV18P notebook is 1-inch thick, weighs 3.9 pounds and comes with 802.11b wireless networking capabilities. Sharp Systems of America says it is one of the thinnest and lightest notebooks in its class, with an 11.1-by-9.4-inch base.

Dell began shipping a free update CD that contains software to remedy a performance glitch that affects Axim X5 models shipped with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC before July 16.

GigaFast announced a new line of 802.11b wireless networking products that will be available this Fall. The new wireless USB adapter and Access Point with 4-Port Internet Router feature GigaFast’s new, streamlined and trademark lightweight, ultra portable design.

Nissan is using AvantGo mobile Internet service to extend its “Shift_” campaign to mobile and wireless devices. Nissan has launched a marketing campaign for the Nissan 2004 Maxima called the Mobile Concierge that packages advertising for the new car with entertainment content for consumers. The Maxima Mobile Concierge includes restaurant, nightlife, hotel, business service, museum listings and other localized information licensed from 10Best. Consumers can now access information for the 25 top U.S. cities and vacation destinations via their PDAs.

EZQuest’s new external Boa Slim DVD-RW drive for Macs and PCs is available now. The drive weighs less than a pound and measures 6-inches, by 5.5-inches, by .75 inch just big enough to accommodate a DVD or CD disc. It features both a FireWire and a USB 2.0 port, and Mac and and PC software. In addition, it is FireWire bus-powered, making it even more portable.

Gary Ankey at EduPalm.org sent in this interesting observation. While not officially listed as discontinued, Palm’s m130, m515 and Tungsten T have begun to disappear from some of Palm’s Web pages. The M515 and Tungsten T are out of stock, and the m130 no longer sports an order link. If you can find the m130 from a third party dealer, look for some nice discounts. The loss of the m130 leaves a large hole in Palm’s pricing structure at the $200 level, a gap the rumored Tungsten E may fill.

Here are a couple of announcements coming from Palm today.The first is that Palm and Novarra announced that specific future Palm handhelds will feature the next generation of the Palm Web Pro browser, powered by Novarra. Meanwhile, PalmSource announced a strategic alliance with PalmGear. As part of the alliance, PalmGear acquired PalmSource’s subsidiary Palm Digital Media, and will power a new PalmSource online store and license the “PalmGear,” “Palm Digital Media” and “Palm Reader” brands.
