PalmSource Chairman Eric Benhamou will step down after the annual meeting of stockholders in October, the company said Friday. Benhamou, who has been serving on the boards of both companies since the spinoff of PalmSource from Palm last October, will continue as chairman for PalmOne.

Tablet PCs are proving to be a bitter pill for the market to swallow, as notebooks continue to out-ship tablets by more than 100 to one. According to market data from Canalys, fewer than 35,000 tablets were shipped in the second quarter of this year, compared to 3.6 million notebooks that were shipped in same period.

A Minnesota high school senior pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to unleashing a variant of the “Blaster” Internet worm, which crippled more than a million computers last summer. Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, of Hopkins, Minn., is likely to face 18 months to three years behind bars after pleading guilty to one count of intentionally causing or attempting to cause damage to a protected computer.

A mobile phone virus inside a pirated copy of a game called Mosquitos is roaming file-sharing and software download sites, say security experts. The Mosquito Trojan is malicious because it fires off text messages without the user’s consent while the unlicensed game is being played.

Nextair announced it has reached an agreement with Expense Controls to bring together web-based expense reporting with Nextair’s wireless technology. Nextair’s AIRIX wireless technology, together with ECI’s web-based applications, will provide mobile workers with the added convenience of processing their expense reports from wherever they are, through any handheld device.

SanDisk announced that the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has awarded its Best Imaging Storage Media Award to the SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash line of high-speed storage cards.

DualDisc is a double-sided hybrid disc format that accepts regular CD audio tracks on one side and DVD music or video on the flip-side. German company DVD Plus International says it owns a European patent that describes a product just like DualDisc, called DVD Plus. The company has already filed a patent application for the technology in the US, though as yet it has not been granted.

The guys at PDAmill have spent the last week working on a lot of updates, mainly for their Palm OS games, providing further device compatibility, fixing problems and reducing memory requirements. Updates have been released for GameBox Solitaire, GameBox Gems, Snails for both Palm and Pocket PC, and their new 3D Pocket PC racing game Flux Challenge is slated for a Monday release.
