Kyocera Wireless expanded the number of possibly counterfeit cell phone batteries it began recalling in May. The recall now includes the KE/KX 400 series, 3200 series and its popular Slider series cell phones sold at Alltel, Cricket Communications, MetroPCS, US Cellular and Verizon Wireless stores nationwide; telemarketing retailers; and various Web sites. The batteries on these phones are prone to overheating, say safety officials. More than a dozen phones with the batteries attached have overheated, causing two minor burn injuries.

A final test version of open-source browser Firefox has been released, giving users a peek at what are expected to be the official features of the free software. The latest test version of Firefox 1.0 fixes about 250 bugs that have been reported since the preview release of the browser earlier this year, according to the Mozilla Foundation.

Advanced Micro Devices formally announced a low-cost Internet device targeted at emerging markets. AMD’s Personal Internet Communicator is designed to provide Net connectivity and Windows-based computing features functions such as browser, e-mail, word processing and the ability to view images and multimedia files.

Microsoft Windows users need to watch out for several flaws in non-Microsoft media players, security experts said. Apple Computer and RealNetworks have both issued fixes for their Windows software to patch serious security vulnerabilities. Apple released Quicktime 6.5.2 on Wednesday to plug two holes in its Windows media player. On Tuesday RealNetworks advised users of its RealPlayer 10, RealPlayer 10.5 and RealOne Player software to use the “Check for Updates” feature to download the latest patch.

A new version of the fast-spreading Bagle mass-mailing worm was discovered Friday, with its threat level quickly rising to a moderate level, according to security experts. Bagle.BB, also known as W32/Bagle.bb@MM, was raised to a medium risk assessment by security company McAfee. The virus had triggered more than 100 reports to McAfee’s antivirus and vulnerability emergency response team by early morning in Europe. Antivirus software makers have also identified two other variants of the Bagle virus that are successfully spreading.

Netriplex is targeting a free version of its email anti-spam service at small businesses. The service, which pre-filters email before it reaches the customer’s gateway, is 98 percent effective at eliminating spam and viruses and produces few false positives, according to Netriplex. The 24/7 service uses multiple gateway filters that are updated every few seconds for known spam signatures.
