
Although Microsoft still dominates the Web browser space, its Internet Explorer continues to lose market share to open-source rival Mozilla. Benefiting from high-profile security vulnerabilities in the Microsoft browser and recommendations by experts to switch, the Mozilla Foundation saw its market share rise. The Mozilla Suite, Netscape, and Firefox held 6 percent of the market at the end of October, up from 3.5 percent in June, according to WebSideStory.

NASA’s plan to send robotic scouts to the moon in advance of astronauts is starting to take shape, but politics and the presidential election are stalling progress. The idea is to have robots map the moon, search for water ice, survey potential landing sites, and test prototypes for oxygen production and electrical power plants, among other things.

A boundary error in Internet Explorer can be used to launch malicious code, according to security firm Secunia. The company said it has confirmed the vulnerability on fully-patched machines with Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP SP1 and Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows 2000. The vulnerability does not affect systems running Windows XP with SP2 installed.

Fujitsu Computer Systems announced the Stylistic ST5020, a tablet PC promising faster performance, longer battery life, and more robust security features than its predecessor, the ST5000. Powered by a 1.1GHz Intel Pentium M ultra-low voltage processor, the slate-style Stylistic ST5020 includes 256MB of 333MHz DDR SDRAM (expandable to 2GB); a 40GB, 60GB, or 80GB hard drive; and a 12.1-inch XGA TFT screen.

Toshiba said Monday that it will offer a free exchange program for more than 25 of its notebook models, caused by a problem with a memory module that appears similar to one that affected Hewlett-Packard several months ago. Toshiba said it had placed a downloadable utility on its Web site so users can determine whether they are affected by the problem. If they are, users can send in the module free of charge and receive a replacement.

The global market for handheld devices continues to dwindle, according to data released by IDC this week. The industry has recorded a year-over-year fall for the third successive quarter, the researcher said. IDC attributed the dip to a drop in shipments from PalmOne and to the gradual withdrawal of Sony from the U.S. market.
