
Consilient Technologies has launched Consilient Wireless University, its wireless training and services division. Consilient Wireless University delivers BlackBerry training courses for system administrators who implement wireless solutions for their organizations, in addition to device end users. Courses are open to organizations using MS Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Sun Messaging or any IMAP4 server.

Cingular Wireless and palmOne announced the availability of the Treo 650 smartphone, the first device of its kind to take advantage of the carrier’s EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network — the fastest national wireless data network in the country. The Treo 650 also is a quad-band worldphone, so Cingular customers can make and receive voice calls in 170 countries and access data in nearly 75 countries.

Dell rolled out several new notebooks, mobile workstations and services for business users on Tuesday. Dell’s new Latitude notebooks and Precision mobile workstations are built on Intel’s Sonoma architecture, which is the latest version of Intel’s Centrino chip set, featuring a 533MHz front-side bus as well as a PCI Express bus architecture. Also new is Dell’s ComputraceComplete Recovery Guarantee service. Under the new offering, Dell will load Absolute Software Inc.’s ComputraceComplete software onto new machines. This software is aimed to help IT departments recover lost notebooks.

NoteFix reports that 1 of 5 reported notebook computer problems is related to software configuration. Configuration parameters are defined by users based on a number of preferences. These preferences include the laptop’s Internet connection method, printer options, schedule for software updates, as well as the definition of hardware ports to external hard drives, modems, and other devices. These settings are often set once and forgotten, only to later become corrupted files that manifest themselves as hardware problems.

PalmSource announced the availability of Java Technology for Palm OS Garnet, a WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment (WEME) Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) certified runtime environment, for the Treo 650 smartphone and Tungsten T5 handheld from palmOne. IBM’s WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment (WEME) Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) certified runtime environment provides the technology needed to enable standards-based mobile Java applications to run on Palm-powered smart mobile devices.

A man charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend by attaching a global positioning system to her car was sentenced to 16 months in state prison, prosecutors said. Ara Gabrielyan, 33, of Glendale, was sentenced Friday after pleading no contest to one count of stalking and two counts of making criminal threats, said Deputy District Attorney Debra Archuleta. Authorities contended that Gabrielyan attached a cell phone to the woman’s car on Aug. 16 with a motion switch that turned on when the car moved, transmitting a signal each minute to a satellite. Information was then sent to a Web site that allowed Gabrielyan to monitor the woman’s location.
