PalmSource, provider of Palm OS, and Texas Instruments announced the availability of two Palm OS Cobalt reference designs running on TI’s OMAP platform, including the OMAP730 GSM/GPRS processor and OMAP850 EDGE processor. These reference designs enable wireless handset OEMs and ODMs to quickly create low-cost, high-performance Palm-powered smartphones for use on GSM/GPRS and EDGE networks. PalmSource and TI will demonstrate Palm OS Cobalt running on TI OMAP technology during 3GSM World Congress, taking place February 14-17 in Cannes, France.

Japanese electronics maker Sony could miss its end-March target for the European launch of its new handheld game machine PlayStation Portable, a company source said Friday. This would effectively be the second time it has delayed the European launch since it originally planned to release the machine in time for Christmas last year.

By combining 3Com’s IP-PBX and wireless LAN switch with RIM’s BlackBerry wireless solution for WLAN networks, the companies plan to offer a rich set of voice and data applications to on-campus enterprise users. The joint 3Com-RIM WLAN solution will provide corporate and government organizations with the flexibility of a session initiation protocol-based BlackBerry handheld that’s tied into their existing PBX telephony. The solution will enable on-campus employees to use always-on BlackBerry applications such as email, VoIP, browser and organizer in conjunction with the BlackBerry platform’s unique connectivity features including push-based services, advanced security and back-end integration.

BenQ and Kineto Wireless announced their collaboration in developing UMA-enabled dual mode GSM-WiFi handsets. BenQ’s P50 Pocket PC phone is the first product from this collaboration. The P50 is a quad-band GSM/GPRS product with an integrated 802.11b Wi-Fi radio and UMA Client Software from Kineto.

Kineto Wireless, supplier of UMA Technology (Unlicensed Mobile Access), announced the company is making its UMA Client Software available for smart phones based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC Phone platform. The UMA Client Software is available as part of Kineto’s suite of Device Developer Solutions.

A former AOL software engineer accused of stealing 92 million screen names has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and interstate transport of stolen property. Jason Smathers, 24, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years and up to $500,000 in fines at a May 20 hearing, although federal guidelines call for significantly less.
