Hackers armed with a moderately sized network of zombie computers theoretically could knock out cellular service throughout the U.S., according to security researchers at Pennsylvania State University. By engaging in a little creative hacking, attackers could build up databases of mobile numbers from specific regions and then flood those numbers with unwanted text messages. Attackers could use publicly available Web sites or messaging clients on zombie computers to send the text messages, which could eventually jam up the cellular towers that carriers use to send and receive SMS messages from mobile phones.

Airtel, India’s leading mobile service and Research In Motion announced plans to enable a wider choice of devices with push-based BlackBerry email services. Through the introduction of BlackBerry Connect in India, Airtel will extend BlackBerry wireless services to the Nokia 9500 Communicator, Nokia 9300 smartphone and Sony Ericsson P910i. Airtel’s BlackBerry portfolio also includes the BlackBerry 7100g and BlackBerry 7290.

The city of Philadelphia has awarded EarthLink a high-profile contract to build a Wi-Fi network stretching over 135 square miles, marking the formal start of the largest municipal effort in the United States to offer wireless Net access. Dianah Neff, Philadelphia’s chief information officer, said the Atlanta-based Internet provider has won the contract to place Wi-Fi access points on telephone poles throughout the city, beating out a competing proposal from Hewlett-Packard. Most city residents will pay $20 a month for access.

Malicious hackers could take down cellular networks in large cities by inundating their popular text-messaging services with the equivalent of spam, said computer security researchers. Such an attack is possible, the researchers say, because cell phone companies provide the text-messaging service to their networks in a way that could allow an attacker who jams the message system to disable the voice network as well.

Mobile phone giant Nokia said shipments of its 770 Internet Tablet device had been delayed to iron out software problems. The Tablet, which is intended to allow users to browse Web sites and check email, is now expected to start shipping in the fourth quarter. The Finnish mobile firm had originally expected the Tablet, which runs on Linux-based software, to enter the market before the end of September.
