Using a $369,000 federal grant, a New Jersey school district hired Eyemetrics Identity Solutions to implement hardware by LG and HP and software by IrisAccess and Newton Security that together form a system which only allows building access to so-called white-listed individuals. Each student is allowed to green-light four people, which puts a cap on the number of folks that have access to a given building.

South Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communications hopes to introduce a series of Internet-connected household robots this October. The bots, according to the Ministry, will be able to perform such household tasks as cleaning, monitoring homes, reading to children, and ordering pizza via the Internet.

Cingular Wireless announced its plan to sell a mobile phone that runs Microsoft’s latest mobile software. The 2125 Smartphone, manufactured by High Tech Computer is available for roughly $200. It is the first U.S. phone based on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software that has a real cell phone keypad instead of a small computer-like keyboard. Companies like Palm and UTStarcom offer phones that run on Windows Mobile 5.0 but they’re typically geared towards corporate customers and feature keyboard-like keypads.

XM Satellite Radio is going hands-free thanks to IBM and VoiceBox Technologies, allowing drivers to talk to their radio–and it will respond. IBM and VoiceBox today announced that VoiceBox will integrate IBM’s speech recognition engine, IBM Embedded ViaVoice into its VoiceBox Navigator, the world’s first conversational voice search platform.

IBM announced that Openstream will embed IBM WebSphere Everyplace Multimodal software into its mobile solutions platform so users can access information on demand using multiple modes of input and output, including talking to a device or typing and tapping buttons on phones, PDAs, and other devices.

T-Mobile has asked a Washington state court to prevent companies from allegedly using fraudulent means to obtain and sell T-Mobile customer call records. German-owned T-Mobile said Monday that it asked the court for an injunction against Data Find Solutions, 1st Source Information Specialists and related companies and individuals. T-Mobile said the companies ran or owned Web sites such as Locatecell.com and Celltolls.com that offered such services.

SYWARE announced Report CE 5.0, a major release of the only report writing, printing, and graphing tool for Pocket PC devices. Report CE 5.0 runs on Pocket PC and Windows Mobile devices, including those that support the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 2005 software, and works with a variety of popular database formats, including SYWARE Visual CE, Microsoft Pocket Access, and SQL Server CE. Antivirus vendors are warning of a rapidly-spreading worm that is carrying a potentially destructive set of instructions. The Nyxem worm–also nicknamed the Kama Sutra worm–is programmed to overwrite all of the files on computers it infects on February 3, says Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure. F-Secure researchers found the worm truncates files to 20 bytes and causes an error message when one is opened. The worm appears to be programmed to overwrite all files on the third day of every month. So far, there’s no indication where Nyxem originated.

T-Mobile UK and Research In Motion announced an expansion of T-Mobile’s portfolio of BlackBerry devices with the introduction of the new BlackBerry 8700g. The device is expected to be available from T-Mobile throughout the UK from early February. The BlackBerry 8700g, developed and manufactured by RIM, has a full QWERTY keyboard in a new, sleek, lightweight design. In addition to standard BlackBerry functionality including support for “push” email, phone, text messaging, browser, organizer and corporate data applications, the BlackBerry 8700g was completely re-engineered to boost performance and features an Intel processor as well as 64 MB flash memory and 16 MB SRAM. The BlackBerry 8700g delivers faster Web browsing, attachment viewing and application performance. Using the BlackBerry 8700g, users can also view common attachments such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
