Smart phones, iPods, and USB memory sticks are posing a real risk for businesses, warn security experts. Just over half of companies take no steps to secure data held on these devices, found a UK government-backed security survey. Now security firms are developing ways to help firms control access to the confidential data held on the gadgets. They are also working on ways to stop the devices being used by viruses as a way to bypass other digital defenses.

The Palm OS may be losing its mojo with software developers. It’s been two years since the release of the last major upgrade to the Palm operating system for mobile devices, not counting the upgrade that never appeared in public. With a brand-new version of the pioneer mobile OS not expected to appear for at least another year, some larger developers of mobile applications are looking elsewhere when launching their new multimedia applications.

Microsoft’s Mobile and Embedded Devices division is moving toward more of an annual refresh schedule for its operating system releases. According to a recent Microsoft executive’s presentation, Microsoft is readying the next two releases, code-named “Crossbow” and “Photon,” of its Windows Mobile operating system. Crossbow, which Microsoft is endeavoring to deliver to cell phone and PDA providers by Q4 2006, will launch officially in the first or second calendar quarter of 2007. Crossbow will be the first operating-system update to Windows Mobile 5.0, the product formerly code-named “Magneto,” which Microsoft delivered last year. Microsoft is working to deliver Photon, the successor to Crossbow, to cell phone and PDA providers by Q4 2007, and launch it officially in the first or second calendar quarter of 2008.
