SpeakSMS is a new Treo utility from Toysoft. The program will attempt to read your incoming SMS text messages to you in the ubiquitous synthesized computer voice. Besides speaking messages back to you, the program can also interpret and properly decode many of the text messaging shortcut abbreviations in use today and you can define your own as well. It also has the ability to display a photo picture ID on the new SMS screen.

Following up on last month’s release of SplashID v. 4.0, SplashData has posted the first new version of their SplashWallet Suite in nearly 16 months. SplashWallet 7.0 brings the new SplashID 4.0 version onboard alongside carryover versions of SplashMoney, SplashPhoto, and SplashShopper from last year’s version 6.1.

Apple has patched a number of critical flaws in its QuickTime media player. With the 7.2 update, users can now view videos on the full screen with the QuickTime player, but the software also contains a number of critical security fixes. In total, Apple has addressed eight security vulnerabilities with the release, which was made public on Wednesday.

Four of the flaws are due to memory corruption or integer overflow bugs that could cause the viewer to crash if QuickTime were used to view maliciously crafted movies or files. Another three critical flaws relate to design issues in QuickTime for Java. Attackers could theoretically exploit these flaws by posting malicious Java applets on a Web site, where they could then compromise a victim’s computer.

Nokia said it has made Skype telephone services available on the Nokia N800 Internet tablet.

With Skype, Internet tablet users could make calls through a wireless internet connection, Nokia said in a statement. Nokia added Skype would be available for download for existing users.

You’ve probably seen mobile phone chargers that can power multiple devices at once and sync data between your phone and a PC. You may have even heard some rumblings about wireless chargers that power devices over the air or solar-powered cell phones. But how about a wind-powered cell phone charger?

Orange, the U.K.-based telecommunications firm, has announced plans to launch The Orange Mobile Wind Charger, a mini turbine that latches on to the top of a tent and stores power in a separate “control box” that users can plug into when their mobiles need juice.

The charger, which weighs roughly one-third of a pound and is small enough to fit into a backpack, was developed at the University of Texas at Arlington, according to Orange. Gotwind, a do-it-yourself website for energy enthusiasts, was commissioned to build the prototype charger. It was shown off at last month’s Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. In an environment with consistent 12 mph winds, it would take roughly 24 hours to charge an average cell phone, according to Ben Jandrell, the founder of Gotwind.

Sony has unveiled a re-designed PlayStation Portable which is slimmer, lighter, and comes with a video-out port for watching content on TVs. The form factor of the portable console is virtually unchanged but the device is now 33% lighter and 19% slimmer. Sony has shipped more than 25M PSPs since its launch in 2004.

No release date or price was given for the new PSP. It lags behind sales of the Nintendo DS, which has shipped more than 40M units worldwide.

If any of the thousands of people who waited in line two weeks ago at Apple and AT&T stores to purchase the iPhone have encountered buyer’s remorse, Friday is deadline for a full refund.

Both Apple and AT&T will accept iPhone returns within 14 days of purchase. If you opened the box, there’s a 10 percent restocking fee, but you won’t be charged the early termination fee if you also want to cancel service with AT&T. After 14 days, you can cancel your service, but you can’t return the iPhone. And after 30 days, you’re stuck with both the service and the iPhone.
