Digitope Corporation has announced Media Digitalizer 3.2, the latest version of the all-in-one recording application that records cassette tapes or records to audio CDs or MP3 and WMA formats.

Oki Electric has released middleware that can add iris recognition to cell phones and PDAs. The “Iris Recognition Technology for Mobile Terminals” software reportedly uses existing cameras and currently targets handheld devices running Windows Mobile, Windows XP or Symbian OS.

For several years, Oki has been providing iris-recognition equipment, but these devices required dedicated infrared cameras. The company says its new middleware can now use any camera offering more than 1 megapixel. This permits developers to add biometric security to easily stolen mobile devices, without a fingerprint reader or other additional hardware.

A new version of the Gizmo Project, which delivers free multi-network instant messaging, is being used by SIPphone, Inc. for Palm OS smartphone and PDA users. This latest edition supports a wide range of models, including the Treo 600/650/680/700p, Sony UX-50, Tungsten T3 and Palm Zire.

DDH Software introduced a version of its HanDBase relational database application for BlackBerry smartphones from Research In Motion, including the popular BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry 8800 Series handsets.

The HanDBase platform allows users to create their own databases and download databases from others over the Internet. Select editions of HanDBase for BlackBerry smartphones even synchronize with corporate databases from Microsoft Access, SQL Server, Sybase, Oracle, MySQL and other ODBC sources. Voxonic’s technology converts any voice, speech, or song into 1,400 different languages. Unlike standard voice conversion companies that create a finished product which simulates a robotic tone, Arie Deutsch, President of Voxonic has developed a technology that retains the voice of the original speaker. A 10-minute sample of the original speaker’s voice is taken and broken into “phonemes,” the basic sound that forms words. Afterwards, an actor who is fluent in the desired language is hired to record a lyric or speech and the two voice patterns are aligned, resulting in a 99% level of accuracy in the original speaker’s voice.

Look who Google is up against — all the largest Internet service providers in the U.S. Google will not win this even if they win the auction, because the telcos and cable companies are far more skilled and cunning when it comes to lobbying and controlling politicians than Google can ever hope to be. The telcos have spent more than a century at this game and Google hasn’t even been in it for a decade. And Google’s pockets are no deeper than those of the other potential bidders.

Dell and Lenovo announced the first notebooks with embedded Certified Wireless USB chips, which will enable cable-free connections to USB peripherals hooked up to Certified Wireless USB hubs that D-Link and IOGear also announced. Additionally, D-Link and IOGear announced Certified Wireless USB adapters that you can plug into USB ports to add the functionality to notebooks and PCs that don’t have it built in.

The notebooks (the Dell Inspiron 1720 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and T62p), wireless hubs, and wireless USB adapters from D-Link and IOGear are the first products to receive Wireless USB Certification from the USB Implementers Forum. They’re expected to ship in time for back-to-school and holiday-season purchases.

Palm announced the availability of a Common Access Card solution for Treo smartphones running Windows Mobile 5.0 with Direct Push Technology.

Officially called the Smartphone Security Version 7 CAC Pack from Trust Digital, the CAC Pack for Windows Mobile-based Treo smartphones addresses Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12, which requires all federal agencies to implement a system of smartcards that deliver a common, two-factor authentication method for physical doors, computers and smartphones in all federal buildings.
