For companies that pride themselves on service and reliability, AT&T and Research In Motion certainly have had their share of service interruptions, and there seems to be no end in sight.

Yet another data outage Aug. 1, although brief, is reported to have affected numerous BlackBerry users nationwide. According to Brad Mays, a spokesperson for AT&T, headquartered in San Antonio, some of AT&T’s EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) wireless data customers around the country experienced difficulty with the wireless data network for a brief period of time. Voice calling was unaffected, and the company quickly identified the cause of the problem and fixed it.

The latest outage follows several over the past few months, including one July 20 in the Northeast, one July 2 in the Midwest and West, and a massive outage in mid-April.

Hot demand and a massive battery recall are causing shortages of key components for the notebook computer industry, analysts and companies say.

The worst case scenario for users is the likelihood of fewer deals for new notebook computers over the next five months because PC manufacturers are paying a premium for components and have to pass those higher costs down the PC supply chain. Users are also likely to see fewer discounts and other promotions, such as extra DRAM or a bigger hard disk drive.

A security update for Apple’s iPhone does more than just fix critical flaws in the handset. It also looks for and wipes out any modifications that users make to the firmware on their phones, according to hackers looking to unlock the phone.

But the security update does not break any of the tools that hackers have so far developed to modify the iPhone’s firmware, they said. The iPhone v1.0.1 update primarily addresses a security flaw uncovered in the handset’s Safari browser that was to be detailed Thursday at the Black Hat 2007 conference in Las Vegas.

Users who access Google’s Gmail or the Facebook social-networking site over Wi-Fi could put their accounts at risk of being hijacked, according to research from Errata Security, a computer security company.

It’s not just those sites but any rich Web applications that exchange account information with users, including blogging sites such as Blogspot or even software-as-a-service offerings such as Salesforce.com, that could pose a risk for users, wrote Errata’s Robert Graham, CEO, and David Maynor, chief technology officer, in a paper.

Rap singer Eminem has accused Apple of copyright infringement in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit, according to a story in The Detroit News.

Eminem’s music publishers have not given Apple permission to offer the artist’s music for download, according to the report in Tuesday’s paper, although Eminem’s music is available through the Apple’s iTunes Store.

SoftLogica announced the release of Handy Recovery 4.0, a new version of its data recovery software designed to restore accidentally lost files. The program supports NTFS/NTFS 5, FAT 12/16/32 and HFS/HFS+ file systems including image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards.

Handy Recovery uses an Explorer-like interface to browse the contents of your disk. The difference is that after analysis of your disk, you can see deleted files and folders along with the regular ones. The program shows the probability of successful recovery for each file. Recovered files can be saved to any drive accessible on your system. You can also restore the full branch of the folder tree that contains selected files and folders. Along with the main file data, the program can recover alternate data streams, used on NTFS to store additional information about files.
