DataViz has released an update to Documents to Go for Palm OS. Version 10.02 brings complete Microsoft Office 2007 file support. Users can now view, edit and create Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 compatible files and attachments in their native formats on current Palm smartphones and handheld devices. Customers who purchased v10.001 will receive the upgrade at no additional cost and upgrade pricing is also available.

Megasoft2000 has updated their keyguard enhancement tool. KeyguardExt provides a wide range of extra information and customizable functions. Instead of just the time and date, KeyguardExt will display a large clock and date display, a battery meter, memory status, signal strength, bluetooth status, missed calls and messaging information. It has been updated with full support for the Palm Centro and a few minor bugfixes.

Notebook vendors should pay more attention to their enterprise customers, says Gabriel Vitus, IT director of the Vancouver, B.C.-based Certified General Accountants Association of Canada. “Not only on the big issues, but also on the little things,” he says. “Like button placement.” Even today, many CIOs feel that too many notebooks have batteries that conk out in the middle of a job, weigh too much, or fail to keep critical information secure. “There’s plenty of room for improvement,” Vitus says.

As 2008 dawns, CIOs have some reason for optimism. Notebook makers are prioritizing improvements to design, storage, and displays that could make the notebooks of 2011 quite different than the workhorses of today. “Notebooks are rapidly evolving and improving,” says Rob Enderle, principal analyst of the Enderle Group consultancy. Does a three-pound laptop that runs some 8 hours sound good to you? Then you may like the machines of 2011.

Online retailer Amazon.com plans to introduce its electronic book device at a New York event Monday, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing two people familiar with the company’s plans. Representatives from Amazon were not immediately available for comment. The Journal said the news was reported earlier on CNET’s Web site.

Industry speculation about the new Amazon device–reportedly named “Kindle”–has occurred for the past year, the Journal said. The newspaper also said Amazon has been preparing its digital book store for the launch of the new device by making inactive links to electronic books called “Kindle” editions available on the product pages of various books.

Sure, instant messaging is fast and efficient. For many teenagers, it’s also a great way to avoid those OMG moments–that’s “omigod”–of mortifying face-to-face confrontations. More than four in 10 teens, or 43 percent, who instant message use it for things they wouldn’t say in person, according to an Associated Press-AOL poll released Thursday. Twenty-two percent use IMs to ask people out on dates or accept them, and 13 percent use them to break up.

Overall, nearly half of teens age 13 to 18 said they use instant messaging, those staccato, Internet-borne strings of real-time chatter often coupled with enough frenzied multitasking to fry the typical adult brain. Only about one in five adults said they use IMs–though usually with less technological aplomb or hormone-driven social drama.

U.S. wireless carrier AT&T has released AT&T Remote Monitor, a new facilities monitoring solution to help small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) keep tabs on their various offices or work sites via smartphones or Internet connected PCs.
