Schools and universities are often big fans of Apple products, which usually translates to labs and laptop carts full of Macs. Educational institutions across the country have also started to provide students with personal laptops. Louisiana recently launched a program to distribute MacBooks to elementary school students, and now Abilene Christian University in Texas is getting into the act as well. But rather than handing out MacBooks, the university will be distributing iPhones and iPod touches to all incoming freshmen.

McAfee has unearthed a Windows Mobile Pocket PC Trojan that disables security, installs via a memory card, can’t be uninstalled and makes itself your home page. According McAfee’s Avert Labs blog, the Trojan has been discovered in China.

SYWARE, developer of mobile database tools for business and personal productivity, announced the Spring 2008 Visual CE and Associated Tools training courses. Visual CE is a rapid application development tool used to create database applications that run on Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PCs.

SYWARE will offer this round of classes near its corporate headquarters in Cambridge, MA. The first class will be held on May 5, 2008 and will be a full day session covering basic database design and an introduction to mobile application development with Visual CE. An intermediate full day class will be held on May 6, 2008 covering Visual CE development specifics.

Two men convicted of armed robbery made the mistake of using text messages–which their wireless provider turned over to police when asked.

Derrick McCreary and his co-defendant, Jonathan Hunter, were accused of masterminding heists at credit unions, with one article in Credit Union Journal reporting that they made off with almost $300,000.

Prosecutors obtained the contents of the archived text messages by sending a grand jury subpoena to SkyTel. McCreary and Hunter were each convicted of one count of conspiracy, two counts of bank robbery, and two counts of using a firearm in a violent crime. They appealed.

Softick has updated their popular Audio Gateway program, the Bluetooth Stereo A2DP solution for Palm OS devices. A lot of updates, bugfixes and optimizations have been added since the last major revision. Included in this version is support for pre 4.2 versions of Kinoma player and Sprint TV, improved Audio/Video Control Profile (AVRCP) connections, better mono sound streams, support for Fast Forward/Fast Rewind buttons on stereo headsets in pTunes, and support for the latest Treo 755p update.

Laptop computer storage is racing fast towards the 500GB level with Fujitsu becoming the third hard-disk drive maker to announce a drive at that capacity.

Fujitsu is accomplishing this capacity by combining three disk platters–the magnetically-coated disks on which data is stored–each with a 170GB capacity inside the drive. Hitachi, the first company to announce a 500GB drive, and Samsung Electronics are also using three platter designs.
