NormSoft announced the availability of its Pocket Tunes Deluxe on Palm’s newest smartphone, the Palm Centro from AT&T. The handset’s core music playback capabilities are embodied within the Pocket Tunes player.

Microsoft has spun its wheels for years attempting to craft an in-car computer, but the company may be primed for pole position with its latest effort to weave software into auto design.

The system is called Sync, and it lets motorists control car stereos and mobile phones with voice commands. Sync was featured in a keynote speech by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it’s available exclusively from Ford Motor.

Microsoft said it will stop making HD DVD players for its Xbox 360 video game system after Toshiba ceded the high-definition video format battle to Sony’s Blu-ray.

Microsoft said Saturday it would continue to provide standard warranty support for its HD DVD players. Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida last week estimated about 300,000 people own the Microsoft video player, sold as a separate $130 add-on for the Xbox 360.

Microsoft is warning Windows Vista users that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may stop some third-party programs working. The software giant has released a list of programs that may be broken by the SP1 update for Vista.

Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped Web pages. The Windows Vista update will be released to the public in mid-March.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal said that Google has discussed partnering with or even buying Space Data Corp., which uses balloons to beam wireless waves down to Texas, Oklahoma, most of Louisiana and Arkansas and portions of New Mexico and Gulf Coast waters.

T-Mobile announced that it will offer consumers a plan that includes unlimited nationwide wireless calling and unlimited nationwide messaging for $99.99 per month. This offer will be available beginning Thursday, Feb. 21, and will be a great value for new and existing T-Mobile customers.

A U.K. company has come up with a nifty laptop-protection system that can automatically wipe hard disk data on machines taken from authorized locations. Sold as a hosted service, Virtuity’s BackStopp server monitors a protected laptop using any medium available, including the Internet, or locally using Wi-Fi or GSM.

If a laptop is reported stolen–or even just moved from a designated space–the system can reach out and execute a file deletion routine that clears the laptop of all important data.
