Despite legal and technical progress that would allow for in-flight cell phone use on U.S. carriers lawmakers are proposing a bill that would ground any plans that would allow passengers to make cell phone calls 30,000 feet in the air.

Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) introduced the HANG UP Act that, if passed, would make it illegal to talk on a cell phone while in-flight on U.S. airlines. The law would not attempt to restrict all cell phone use, just “voice communications.” According to the bill passengers could still use their cell phones to access the Internet, email and send text messages.

“The public doesn’t want to be subjected to people talking on their cell phones on an already over-packed airplane,” DeFazio said.

Wish Solutions has released a new free edition of its Call Block software for Palm OS smartphones. Call Block Free Edition is a simple yet effective tool to block and filter unsolicited and unwanted incoming calls and sms messages. The software uses a background blocking method to not interrupt you when blocked calls come in. The free version lets you block up to five callers.

CoreCodec has released a new update to its CorePlayer Mobile multimedia software for Palm OS. CorePlayer v1.2.3 brings a large number of new features and all around improvements. The main new features include YouTube video support and a native YouTube browser, the addition of a number of new streaming audio and video formats, Google GData support, multi-language support, optimized AVC playback and AVCHD support.

Tamoggemon Software’s FileFind 3.0 has been released. FileFind makes it possible to search the contents of your memory card and gives you a number of more advanced options to track down what you are looking for. Even with the advent of memory card support in Palm OS 4, the built in search to this day does not look in external memory cards. FileFind overcomes that limitation and can search files on storage cards/internal file stores using their creation, modification, attributes and/or last access dates.

Mobile Stream’s USB Modem software has been updated. The application allows the Treo or Centro to operate as a USB modem for your desktop or laptop computer. The program offers support for Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems. Recent updates include support for the GSM Palm Centro, compatibility with Windows Vista 64-bit and a fix to the built in DUN suppression on the Treo 680 & 755p.

Although it is illegal in some parts of the world, 12 percent of U.S. and U.K. respondents to an Accenture survey have logged on to someone else’s unsecured Wi-Fi connection. Data that is sent via unsecured wireless routers is unencrypted and could theoretically be read by anyone who had the right network sniffing tools, but many people have tried logging on to unsecure Wi-Fi.

Logging on to open Wi-Fi signals is most popular with 18- to 34-year-olds, Accenture said. Nearly a third of them said they had done this at some point. The practice is apparently more common in the U.S., where one in seven have piggybacked on free Wi-Fi networks, than in the U.K., where Accenture found that it was attempted by one in 11.
