
Handspring, Inc. posted revenues of $51.8 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2000, which ended July 1, 2000. Quarterly revenues increased 51% over Q3 due to a strong entry into the U.S. retail market, new distribution channels in Canada, Europe, and Japan, and continued momentum of direct sales of its Visor line of handheld computers and Springboard expansion products.

MpegTV announced the release of the Pocket PC version of its PocketTV MPEG Movie Player software. It allows the user to play standard MPEG movie files on their Pocket PC device.

The Piloteer Magazine has given Cutting Edge Software’s Quicksheet 5.0 its Award for Excellence. The magazine recognized Quicksheet for its superior design developments since it was originally released in 1996. CNET News reports that unnamed sources have revealed Palm is set to release two new devices the first week of August. One is expected to be a new entry-level device intended to replace the Palm III series. Supposedly, it will have a redesigned look, enhanced handwriting recognition, a new flip-up cover, and changeable faceplates. The other may be an update of the Palm VII. The article includes no comment from Palm, which cited a policy of not speaking about unannounced products.

Pacific Neo-Tek has released a Visor Springboard version of the OmniRemote software, previously available for Palm brand devices. It features an IR port that turns a Visor into a universal remote control.

According to CNET News, Palm said it will introduce a lower-priced model in Japan this year aimed at teenagers as part of the company’s plan to gain a majority share in the Japanese handheld market. In Japan, Palm is currently competing with Japanese handheld devices such as Sharp Corp’s Zaurus line and cellular phones with Internet access, such as NTT DoCoMo Inc’s I- mode phones.

Shadowpack Inc. has launched Shadowpack 1.0, a free service that increases the functionality of wireless devices such as smart phones, communicating personal digital assistants (PDAs), and two-way pagers. Shadowpack gives users access to content and services found on any Web or Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) site, including those authored in HDML, WML, and HTML. It should also give wireless users the ability to share Web content.

SEAGULL announced an initiative to deliver real-time wireless access to IBM enterprise applications using Pocket PCs. The initiative includes a rapid-deployment mobile computing solution based on SEAGULL’s Wireless-to-Host technology, the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform, and the Pocket PC.
