Palm’s new COO

Palm, Inc. announced it has hired Todd Bradley, formerly executive vice president of global operations at Gateway Inc., to be executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Solutions Group. In addition, the company said channel sell-through has continued to improve as the company’s new line–the m500 series–is selling well in the United States and has just begun selling internationally.

Palm also said it will make additional reductions in its work force in the first fiscal quarter of 2002 to bring its cost structure closer in line with business conditions. Last month, Palm reduced its work force by a total of about 300 regular and contract workers. The company expects to provide more information about its work-force reduction when it announces fourth-quarter 2001 results the week of June 25.

Palm Boulevard reports GoAmerica Inc. unveiled Mobile Office, a new wireless offering for the enterprise, designed to facilitate desktop replication for mobile professionals and provide the enterprise with one simple and customizable wireless product. Mobile Office is slated for general availability June 25, 2001.

Extended restructuring

CNET News.com reports Extended Systems has announced that it would trim 15 percent of its staff and sell its print-server business. According to the article, the exit from the print-server business and the job cuts had been anticipated as part of the Palm acquisition deal, and despite the fact that the deal is no longer going through, the company is continuing with its planned restructuring.

Acer Mobile Device planned

ZDNet reports Acer, a Taiwan-based computer and computer component company, plans to base a new line of handhelds called the Acer Mobile Device on the Palm OS. The deal, which will be officially announced in Taipei, will be good through 2005.
