3JTech released its second version of Infrared modem, PP2I-5600B of Pegasus III series. It comes with a 100~240 VAC adaptor and can also use four AAA rechargeable batteries. The modem weighs 2.22 ounces. When the modem is not transmitting data for more than five seconds it will automatically operate at lower frequency to save power. It will also automatically shut down three minutes after the line is idle.

Texas Instruments Incorporated introduced a new WLAN processor designed to enable true embedded Wi-Fi applications without compromising battery-life, or requiring extra batteries, bulky enclosures, or continuous reliance on a power cord. The new processor is designed to provide highly power efficient 802.11b connectivity with up to a 10-fold reduction in standby mode power consumption than competitive 802.11b chipsets for laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones and other portable devices.

TI’s TNETW1100B is an integrated, single-chip 802.11b Medium Access Controller (MAC) and baseband processor (BBP) designed specifically to meet the low power and tight space requirements of the emerging embedded and portable WLAN market, while also improving power savings for traditional NIC and PC card applications.

CNET News.com reports Handspring cut the price the Treo 180. It now sells for $349, a $50 drop. According to the article, Sprint also introduced a promotion that gives handheld owners $100 off Handspring’s just introduced Treo 300 when customers trade in their old handheld.

Palm Infocenter reports Pico Communications is going to install PicoBlue Internet Access Points in both the Palm Solutions Group’s new offices in Milpitas and in PalmSource’s new offices in Sunnyvale, both in California. This is expected to be the largest Bluetooth wireless network in the U.S. and the largest enterprise Bluetooth network in the world. It will be operational later this month.

ARS Software GmbH will distribute these technologies aimed at making building Bluetooth applications in Java easier. Rococo’s Bluetooth development tools include Impronto Simulator and Impronto Developer Kit for Palm OS. Impronto Simulator runs Java applications in a simulated Bluetooth environment allowing developers to test and configure applications before deploying them on Bluetooth devices. Impronto Developer Kit for Palm OS makes creating wireless applications easy by hiding complex Bluetooth protocols behind standard Java APIs.
