Robocopters dodge obstacles

University of California researchers are tinkering with technology that will, ideally, let helicopters fly themselves. The Berkeley Aerial Robot (BEAR) project passed a significant milestone earlier this month, when a 130-pound model of a helicopter successfully guided itself through a course that included random obstacles that weren’t on its internal map–a first, according to the university.

Opera releases talking Web browser

Opera Software released a test version of a major update to its Web browser software Thursday, intensifying its efforts, along with open-source rival Firefox, to cut into Microsoft’s market share. The new, as-yet-unnamed software adds stronger support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication)–a technology widely used for automatic access to blogs and other material–and technology that allows users to navigate through voice commands and have Web pages read to them.

Motorola, Sprint bet on high speed

Motorola is betting it can win more business from Sprint as a result of the U.S. mobile phone company’s planned takeover of Nextel Communications, Motorola’s chief strategist said. Motorola’s share price suffered in recent weeks on concern the planned 2005 merger would threaten the company’s exclusive supplier relationship with Nextel. Motorola, the world’s No. 3 cell phone maker, is Nextel’s supplier for a cellular technology known as iDEN, which includes walkie-talkie-style communication. Motorola also makes most of Nextel’s handsets.
