Sales of camera phones worldwide in 2005 are projected to reach 295.5 million, according to market researcher Gartner. And phones with embedded cameras will make up 38 percent of all mobile phones shipped during the year. Camera phones accounted for 14 percent of shipments last year. In North America, camera phone sales are likely to reach 70 million units, or 47 percent of total phone sales, in 2005. In Europe this figure is 85 million, or 55 percent, of total mobile phone sales. Almost 92 percent of all phones sold in Japan have a camera.

Palm has posted a software update for all LifeDrive mobile manager owners. This software update provides a variety of enhancements, including improved Wi-Fi coverage in low signal areas, improved roaming performance, improved file system stability, crisper, clearer sound quality when listening to MP3 files, more flexible multimedia functionality, including file transmission over wireless connections, file saving, and faster recording and playback, better browser performance, including more efficient, faster page rendering, and much more.

Fearing that regulators will expose high network charges to the public, phone companies will scramble to offer new deals. Termination charges are the big scam of the European telcos, and none of the phone owners have a clue how bad it is.

The market for television and other media on mobile phones is poised for an explosion and could be a hot area for investment, advertising and media executives at the Reuters Advertising and Media Summit said. Wireless telephone operators around the world are all looking at providing services such as mobile TV, music downloads, and Web surfing to expand their revenue beyond conventional phone calls. In the United States operators such as Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, and Sprint Nextel are already providing video clips such as news and entertainment to cell phones.

AOL says it has developed a service that will shrink the Internet to fit mobile devices with Web browsers. Mobile phone users can now perform Web searches much like they would on a desktop computer and then access any Web site. Up to now, the tiny screens on most Internet-enabled PDAs and smart phones have been too small to download many Web pages. AOL’s Mobile Search Service automatically adapts search results and Web pages to handheld devices using content-analysis and transcoding technology from InfoGin.

We’re another step of the way along our RSS 2.0 path. Autodiscovery now seems to work. Autodiscovery is an interesting concept. Basically, it’s an HTML link tag that specifies that your page has associated RSS feeds. This is very helpful because, if you’re using an RSS reader or any of the later browsers (like Firefox and Safari), you’ll be able to go to one of the ZATZ magazine Web pages and the reader or the browser will immediately know about associated RSS feeds for those pages.

Right now, it works for instances of the magazines (like DominoPower and OutlookPower, but eventually we should have it working for the other feeds we’re building (for example, we’ll be offering feeds for each of our authors).

A federal judge ruled Friday that Illinois’ restrictions on the sale of violent and sexually explicit video games to minors are unconstitutional and barred the state from enforcing the law. State officials “have come nowhere near” demonstrating that the law passes constitutional muster, said U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Kennelly. Opponents declared the law a restriction on free speech and pointed out that similar laws had been struck down in other states.

The first phase of the extreme RSSization process for ZATZ content appears to be ready for testing. Although we’ve had RSS 0.91 feeds since 1998, we haven’t updated our code for these feeds since, well, 1998. A lot’s changed.

We are now ready to roll out RSS 2.0 feeds for each of our magazines, at least as betas. These are fully-validated RSS 2.0 feeds, including content. We’re currently feeding news, but we’ll be adding more and more as we continue coding and adding more features.

Right now, you can get the feeds themselves. You won’t find the little orange XML icons anywhere, we don’t ping the RSS hubs, and pages don’t respond to autodiscovery requests. We’ll be adding those later.
