NewsGator Technologies announced that it has expanded its mobile portfolio with new RSS aggregators for Windows Mobile and J2ME-enabled devices. The new products accompany the NewsGator Mobile reader for HTML-enabled devices as part of the industry’s most complete mobile RSS catalog. All three mobile products synchronize with the NewsGator family of products, anchored by NewsGator Online, the company’s Web-based aggregator, allowing customers to read content and manage their subscriptions seamlessly from any device. NewsGator recently acquired the Windows Mobile reader (formerly called SmartRead) and SmartFeed, a mobile podcatching application.

Windows Mobile Device Center is the new name for ActiveSync in Microsoft Windows Vista, and provides overall device management features for your Windows Mobile-based devices in Windows Vista, including smartphones and Pocket PCs. All of the features previously available in ActiveSync are available in Windows Vista, including synchronization and setting up your partnership. However, most of the user interface has changed in an effort to enhance your ability to easily and intuitively find device-related tasks and improve the overall usability of those tasks.

AppForge announced the latest version of its mobile application platform, Crossfire 6.0. The technology in Crossfire 6.0 marks the first time Visual Studio developers can easily create comprehensive on-device mobile applications for the millions of Palm Treo, BlackBerry and other mobile devices in the market. Significant new product features found in Crossfire 6.0 include translation of Visual Basic .NET and C# into native J2ME applications for BlackBerry devices within Microsoft Visual Studio, support for the entire Palm Treo smartphone product family, including the Palm Treo 700w device with Microsoft Windows Mobile, and Palm-powered Treo 600 and 650 devices, and much more.

GrxView, a full featured image viewer for Palm OS from inDev Software, has been updated to version 3.0. GrxView offers native photo and graphics viewing and file and image management. It also has support for anti-aliased image zooming and panning capabilities. This new version features speed improvements, animated gif support and a new refined file manager interface including two new views with image thumbnails. The program supports all screen resolutions, memory cards and many common image formats.

Blog-hosting service Six Apart purchased mobile photo blogging service SplashBlog in a move that reaffirms the blogosphere’s direction toward richer content and newer delivery platforms. The SplashBlog service allows users to instantly publish photos from a camera phone to a blog. Building on features Six Apart users already enjoy in Movable Type, TypePad and LiveJournal, SplashBlog provides client software that runs on a variety of camera phones and a photo-hosting service that links the mobile phone and Web service with two-way synching.

Cbeyond and Research In Motion introduced the BlackBerry wireless platform together with Cbeyond’s BeyondMobile service. BlackBerry enables Cbeyond subscribers to easily access email, phone, text messaging, Internet, organizer and other data applications from a single, integrated device. By using BlackBerry to wirelessly access business applications, Cbeyond customers will be able to increase productivity and effectiveness for individuals and workgroups. The BlackBerry solution, including the CDMA-based BlackBerry 7250, is now offered in conjunction with Cbeyond’s BeyondMobile service. Cbeyond is offering BeyondMobile as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, but with a different approach to bundling and billing voice calling minutes. Because Cbeyond offers landline, Internet and mobile services, it bundles all long distance, toll-free and mobile minutes together. Cbeyond’s small business customers can apply any unused long distance and toll free minutes to their mobile service and vice versa for free. The sharing of minutes is seamless and requires no intervention from the business owner. Cbeyond also lets small businesses pool all mobile minutes across employees so there’s no need to juggle different rate plans.

Symantec will teach an old dog new tricks when it launches the next major release of its 20-year-old remote control software, PCAnywhere. Along with version 12.0 of the widely used remote desktop management software, which emphasizes simpler connectivity and greater scalability, the Cupertino, Calif. company will also introduce a new PCAnywhere Access Server to facilitate connectivity from anywhere to anywhere. PCAnywhere 12.0 includes a new gateway that addresses the challenges of connecting to remote PCs and laptops through firewalls, routers, Network Address Translation devices and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol IP address assignment through a new gateway option.

For the first time, reportedly, researchers have successfully tested an implantable microchip device that is activated wirelessly to deliver controlled doses of drugs into the body over a prolonged period of time. The technology comes from MicroChips, a privately held company specializing in implantable drug delivery and biosensors. The results of the study were described in a recent online edition of the journal, Nature Biotechnology. The system is unique in its use of wireless signaling, its small size and its system of reservoirs allowing precise, efficient delivery of solids, liquids or gels. This technology is expected to be most effective in delivering proteins, small molecules and other drugs that are highly potent, have limited stability and must be delivered in precise doses at specific times.
