IBM researchers have created the first complete integrated circuit built around a single carbon nanotube molecule, a new material that promises significant benefits compared to traditional silicon. The breakthrough is noteworthy not only because the circuit was built using standard semiconductor processes, but also because it used a single molecule as the base for all components in the circuit rather than linking together individual components. The number of students penalized for cheating in school exams and coursework in England rose by over a quarter last summer, the country’s exam watchdog said on Monday. Candidates caught with mobile phones in exam halls accounted for around 25 percent of the offenses, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority said. “Over recent years we have seen a noticeable rise in the number of mobile phone related incidents in examination halls across the country,” said QCA Chief Executive Ken Boston.

Palm reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit as it sold more Treo cell phones and introduced a new device based on Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Funeral services for Paul A. Flaherty, 42, the computer engineer who developed key inventions for the Alta Vista search engine, were held Friday in Menlo Park, CA, not far from the former Digital Equipment Lab where the pioneering search engine was launched. Flaherty died March 16 of a heart attack at his home in Belmont, Calif.
