SavaJe, a spinoff of Lucent Technologies, threw its hat–or, rather, cellphone–into the ring at the 2006 JavaOne Conference in San Francisco this week, with the unveiling of a “sophisticated” handset that runs a unique, Java-centric operating system. The Jasper S20 mobile phone, made by Group Sense Limited PDA and running SavaJe’s Java-based SavaJe Mobile Platform, also garnered JavaOne’s “Device of the Show” honors.

Advanced Micro Devices says its new chip design will boost processor performance without increasing power consumption. The Sunnyvale, Calif., chip maker previewed a quad-core processor design the company said it will use to create higher-performing Opteron chips, in addition to boosting some of its other chip lines.

Laplink announced that its PC transfer and migration software, PCmover, now supports migrations to PCs using the Windows XP Media Center operating system. Consumers now have a way to move files, settings, and even entire programs quickly and automatically from their old PCs to their new Media Center PCs. PCmover is the only product that moves all programs between PCs, even if they have different operating systems and hardware.

IBM and Research In Motion announced their intent to undertake new initiatives designed to drive growth in the mobile industry by providing customers with the benefits of tighter integration between IBM Lotus Domino and the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution. Initial areas of focus include helping “workers on the go” by extending the millions of Lotus Domino applications through Web services directly to BlackBerry and enhancing performance of the BlackBerry solution for Lotus Domino. As part of market awareness initiatives, RIM will offer a BlackBerry Enterprise Server promotion to Lotus Domino or IBM Lotus Sametime customers.

These self-extracting Zip files are ideal for electronic file distribution, because they can contain multiple compressed files, minimizing download time and ensuring that important files do not become separated from the rest of the package, and allow the receiver to use a familiar Windows interface to decompress files without a separate unzip utility. The current release of WinZip contains WinZip Self-Extractor Personal Edition, a subset of WinZip Self-Extractor 3.0.

Creative Technology has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the iPod’s interface is infringing on the company’s “Zen Patent.” Creative also said that it has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission requesting that the federal agency launch an investigation into whether Apple has violated Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 through its importation and sale after importation into the United States of iPods and iPod Nanos that infringe U.S. Patent 6,928,433, which Creative refers to as the Zen Patent.

Sony Electronics introduced the VAIO UX Micro PC, placing full-size computer performance in a pocket-sized package. Weighing just over a pound, the new PC has a Microsoft XP Professional operating system and an Intel Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage CPU for fast processing and long battery life. The UX model also features a 4.5-inch wide SVGA screen with XBRITE technology for viewing that slides up to expose an integrated keyboard. This allows you to access familiar applications easily in the same way you would on a full-sized computer. The pocket-sized PC also comes equipped with a stylus and Sony’s VAIO touch launcher for quick access to functions frequently used such as Internet access, email, various computer applications, games and music.

With the exception of the Thinkpad X41 tablet, Lenovo is rounding up the rest of the Thinkpads and giving them Intel Core Duo updates. The company announced May 16 that its Thinkpad Z series, including the Z61m and Z61t, as well as the budget-friendly Thinkpad R60, will receive dual-core processing power. The Thinkpad Z61t is the more portable version of the Thinkpad Z61m, weighing under 5 pounds. The machine still maintains a 14.1-inch screen and Thinkpad keyboard and Trackpoint.
